Golden Wedding Celebration
On Tuesday, December 21st, Mr.
and Mrs. Thos. Short, were the
recipients of gifts and congratulat-
ions from their many friends on ,the
occasion of their 50th wedding anni
versary. A family dinner was held at
noon at which their only, son, Law.
rence and Mrs., Short, their children,
Ronald and Carroll of . Fergus, and
their only daughter, Miss Myrtle
Short of the Gorrie P. 0. Staff were
present, Mr. and Mrs. Short were
married in Gorrie 50. years ago by the
late, Rev. A. B, nu-110y, rector of
the Apglican Church at that time, For
a few years they resided in Turnberry,
but for many years they have been
highly respected residents of Gorrie.
Christmas Concert
The township Hall was well filled
on Wednesday evening, when pupils
of the sr. and . jr. rooms of fthe !Gorrie
Public School presented their annual
Christmas concert under the direction
of their teachers, Miss Jean Sparling
and Mrs. McDonald. Christmas dec-
orations and a gaily lit Christmas tree,
provided a pleasing setting for the
variety program of Christmas Carols,
dialogues, dances and songs, with the
pupils in colorful costutnes. A Christ-
mas cantata in six parts was the
closing number of the program. Rev,
J. C. Caley acted as chairman, The
visit of Santa accompanied by Mrs.
Santa and the distribution of gifts
completed a very pleasant evening.
The teachers and pupils arc to be
congratulated on the success of their
evening's entertainment.
Mrs. Jas. Underwood
Mrs. Jas. Underwood passed away
at 3 a,m, on Thursday morning, at . the
home of 'bee daughter, Mrs, Wilbert
Gallaway, She had been an invalid
since breaking her hip in April, 1947.
Mrs. Underwood, who was in her 85th
year, was the daughter , of the late
John and Elizabeth McCreery, and
was born in' Carrick Township, After
her marriage to Jas. Underwood, they
resided on the 13. Line, Howick, later
coming to live in Gorrie. She leaves
to mourn the loss of a loving mother,
two sons, Gordon of Gorrie, Wesley,
13, Line, and one daughter, (Sarah),
Mrs. Wilbert Gallaway, Gorrie, seven
grandchildren and five great grand-
children. Her. ltushand predeceased
her in Dec, 1940'. Funeral service was
held on Friday afternoon at the M. D.
Irvin Funeral Home, conducted by
Rev, 'rhos, Hutton of the Presbyter.

member. He was assisted by Rev. G.
G, Howse.
Pallbearers were Allan and Glen
Underwood, Wesley Gallaway, Ken
Underwood, Vern Clark and Edward
Stewart. Interment was in Gorrie

.coneert on the afternoon of Dee. 14th,
Mrs, MacLean's pupils presented a
fine variety program. Santa arrived
and distributed gifts and lunch was
served,
Irene Finley of Hespeler,
spent the week-end with Mr, arid Mrs.
Ch;Iss M si Finigille Farrish of Listowel,
and Miss Mildred Farrish of Hes-
peter, were week-end visitors at the
parental home, •
Mr, Thos. Vittie underwent an .op-
eration for appendicitis in the Wing-
ham General Hospital on Monday,
He is expected to return to his home
this week, Bill Stafford who fractured
hiS knee cap some weeks ago, had the
misfortune to fall on Saturday and
bend the injured limb and is again a
patient in the Wingham Hospital,
where lie expects to have to remain
until after Christmas. Two membas
of the same family in the hospital is
certainly hard luck.
Mrs, Lillian Shepherd, her son,
Mr, Edgar Shepherd, and daughter,
Miss Alla Shepherd, of St. Catharines,
were recent visitors with the former's

their infant, son, at the Wingham
Hospital on Wednesday last,

David Neilson.

John, visited friends near Molesworth
on Sunday.
Mr. Clifford D: •Walmsley, account-
ant at the branch of the Dominion
Bank, St. Thomas, since 1936, has
been appointed manager of the branch
of the Dominion Bank here. He will
assume his duties on Jan. 3rd, „
On December 23rd,, Mr. and Mrs.
Wm. Wade of Fordwich, will mark
their 57th wedding anniversary. Both
are enjoying good health. Mr, Wade
is particularly active for his 91 years.
Mr. Clarence Wade of Belgrave, is
their only son, and Miss Beatrice
Wade, teacher of the Junior room
in Fordwich, their only (laughter,

A private funeral service was held
on Monday afternoon at the M., D.
Irvin Funeral Home and a public ser-
vice in the Fordwich United Church
for Wm. John Mee, who died suddes-
ly on Saturday in the Listowel Mem-
orial Hospital in his 69th year, He
forMerly farmed on the 9th con, but
had been a resident of Fordwich for
the past number of years. He was a
member of the United Church. Inter-
ment will be in Fordwich cemetery.
An only sister, Miss Carrie Mee,
predeceased him. Surviving is a bro-
ther, Robert in Toronto.
Vesper Service '
The Canadian Girls in Training
held their Christmas Vesper service,
on Sunday evening, in the United
Church., The meeting opened with
the Christmas Carol, "Angels from
the Realms of Glory." The President,
Betty Zimmerman, -gave. the "Call to
Worship. "• The Christmas story, Luke
2: 7-20, was read by Phyllis Ford,
Poem, "Peace on Earth" was giyen
by Gwen Ruttan. Carols, "It' came
upon the Midnight Clear" and "Silent
Night" were sung. Scripture reading
from Matt. 2: 1-11, was read by Kay
Cathers. The offering was received
and dedicated. The Story of the
"Sacred Flame" was 'given by Elean-
ore Stephens. Taking part in the
candle lighting were, Bonnie Zimmer-
man, Dorothy Downey, Shirley Shera,
Kathleen Ford and Alice Downey.
The service closed with prayer by
the President.

The GorrielZ.P.U. met at the home
of Anna and Marion Toner on Friday
evening, December 17th, with 16 pre-
sent. ,The meeting opened by singing
"0 Come, all ye Faithful." Scripture
was read and the hymn "As with
Gladness Men of Old" was sung. Top-
ic "Christmas in India and China"
was read and the old Carol, "It came
upon the Midnight Clear" was sung.
Rev. Howse conducted the Bible
Study., Following the business period
a splendid lunch was served by the
hostesses. Next meeting will be held
on Jan. 2nd.
Anglican Church
The Christmas service was held in
St. Stephen's Church on Sunday af-
ternoon, when Rev. J. C. Caley gave
the Christmas message, and the ser-
vice of Holy Communion was admin-
istered. Misses Edith Dinsmore and
Thelma Bennett gang and Christmas
hymns were sung by the congrega.

S. S. 'Will Hold Pageant
A pageant, "Christmas Angels" will
be presented by the seniors of the
Sunday School, Sunday evening, Dee.
26th, in the United Church at 8 p.m.,
which will include a "White Gift
Service." All the children of the con-
gregation are invited to take part in
the White Gift Service, A box will be
plateth in the lobby of the church to
receive the gifts of others: All are in-
vited to attend this Christmas presen-
tation,
An appeal is made for clothing and
food for European relief. There is
urgent need for .used clothing of all
kinds for for all ages, also bedding,
towels, handkerchiefs and wash cloths.

The minutes were read and adopted.
Letters of thanks were read. A dona-
tion was given to "Save the Children"
Fund. A Committee was named to
keep in touch with the Council regard-
ing Mr. Neil's museum that has been
sold to the County Council. The
motto was prepared by Mrs. Fergus-
son and read by Mrs. P. Kaine. The
Xmas Cheer Committee in charge are:

were given by Mrs. C. Wilson Mar-
garet Dane read a paper on Home
