PHIL OSIFER OF LAZY MEADOWS I was drawing gravel the other day for the laneway, The weather has stayed open this Fall, and because the laneway gets so sticky in the Spring, it seemed like a good tine to collect the gravel. Ed. Higgins was also drawing gravel for the foundation of the pig pen he's going to build and Tom Weatherbee, the road supervisor was also drawing some for paining up spots that have taken a bit of beat- ing from the .trucks that have been hauling material for the new post- office. The first time I met Ed. lie pulled up and we talked a bit. 1 told him about fixing -up the laneway. He sug- gested that I draw some coarse stuff first from the crusher and then spread a few loads of fine gravel over the top. Ed, puffing stolidly on his pipe, told me drat he was drawing the grayel for the foundation of a new pig pen. I then told hint a few idea, I had about the way pig pens should be designed, so as to make them et.s- ier to work around and that ,orne- thing should be built that would ease up on the job of loading pigs in a truck. I clacked to my team and he clack- ed to his and we drove apart. On 'my way I met Tom Weatherbee who stop- ped his truck. I told him about the laneway and he gave me some advice. Then he told me about the pitch- holes in the roadway and I told !Jim what I thought about them, particu- larly the ones that seem to appear each spring. He drove on and I drove on, On my way back with the empty wagon I met Ed With a full load of gravel. We stopped and agreed upon this being a remarkable Season for weather. This was followed by a dis- Snoteplouung in Me Blue Mountains .X4rofitm ON SKIS c xliNG is fine in Ontario—with a v•D long list of favoured slopes. The Toronto Ski Club, 8 Colborne Avenue, Toronto, is glad to give particulars of ski runs throughout the Province. Thousands of friendly visitors come each winter to enjoy our slopes. Let's make sure they have a warm welcome! LET'S MAKE THEM WANT TO COME BACKI cussion on how the wheat looked. The conservation peetered out then and we moved apart. Tom Weather- bee stopped his truck . when I met him the next time. We had another dis- cussion about the weather and the wheat fields. On my way from the pit with a load of gravel I met Ed. Higgins. We stopped and talked about the Ameri- can elections and the Canadian situ- ation as far as politics are concerned. The conversation was definitely draggy. Ed, drove on for the pit and I headed for home. Weatherbee along and he stopped to tell me stork about one of the councillors trying to get him to buy gravel from another Pit owned by one of his. reis- Oyes. I brought up the matter of the election of Truman. The talk petered out. On my way back I thought Ed. wasn't,. going to stop. He did however and then be told me about the conic- cillor and I listened as if I hadn't heard it before. I lit my pipe and he lit his arid we fidgeted a hit and mov". ed on. Then I met Weatherbee. He slowed down and then finally drove On, That was one relief. On my way back I met Ed. He started to stop and I waved my hand and drove on. After that, each time we met there was an embarassed quality about it, I was glad however, that it worked out that way. It was getting tough to find subjects for our five minute conversations.
