dire afflictions,
Fear is not a pleasant sensation but
it does serve a useful purpose. It
makes mankind do something that
might otherwise be neglected, to re-
move the dangers which are feared.
Fear of the certain results of neglected
afflictions, such as disease, cause man-
kind to seek a cure before it is too late.
And so with this present universal
fear of war, in demoncratie countries
it is causing them to seek every pos-

sible means, except disgraceful sub-
;mission and appeasement of the op-
Iptessor, to prevent the outbreak of
'hostilities and sat the same time, it is
causing them to prepare for the con-
flict if it does come.
Fear snakes better soldiers, and few
indeed are the soldiers in combat who
do not know fear. Fear often saves
lives, because, when a man is its dan-
ger, whether he's on a battlefield or in
an accident, it enables him to fight
back or gives him extra strength and
extra acuteness to escape from his dire
predicament. Scientists have proven
that fear pumps a man full of extra
energy by increasing the sugar con-
tent of ins body. It makes his heart
pump more powerfully, makes his
metabolic rate jump, makes his blood
rush to his brain and skeletal muscles
which makes the senses sharper and
muscular reaction quicker, and it also
makes the abdominal muscles tighten
which draws the stomach closer to the
• spine where it is less vulnerable to in-
jury,
Of course some fears are harmful,
One can have no sympathy with or
respect for those shivering souls 'who
are hounded by unreasonable, tortur-
ing fears of every minor ailment or
little daily mishap or occurrence.
People who are afraid of everybody
and everything, even of themselves,
suffer from serious emotional instabil-
ity and need medical attention. Sup-
pressed fears also are harmful because
they may create a state of tension and
strain in the internal organs which
can result in serious illness, or they
may cause a person to take unneces-
sary risks to prove that he isn't afraid,
Fear is no disgrace and no normal
- man or woman cali-ilismiss fear from
his or her life. * * *

FEAR IS THE MOST
UNIVERSAL EMOTION
If you value your health and you
life, don't be afraid to be afraid. And
don't go around boasting that you have
no fears because that is often a sign
of fear. No human being can live with-
out fear so thete is no sane reason to
be afaraid of your fears. Experiment-
ers have found that tear is the most
powerful of all human emotions, even
stronger than love and it is the most
universal emotion.
Daily we read in our newspapers
and other publications, and hear over
the radio that men's hearts are filled
with fear of the future. For the third
time in this century the world appears
to be heading towards another catas-
trophic world war, and since the hum-
an race sinned and was forced out of
the Garden of Eden, mankind has al-

at the Mission Band meeting in the

routine opening exercises including the
repeating of the Mission Band Pur-
pose and a prayer for Missionaries.
All joined in singing "Jesus is Tender-

Birthday greetings were sung for
Cavell and Betty Ruttan.
The Worship Service was conduzied

Much interest was shown in a con-

fill in omissions in the titles of hymns
written on the blackboard. Eleanor
Smith and Jean Hall played a piano
