At the same time there is urgent
need for a nurses' home. Tlds long-
felt need has been accentuated since
the overcrowding has forced many of
them to seek accommodation outside
the hospital in private homes. The
nurses should have a separate wing
in the hospital or a separate residence
joined to the hospital by a tunnel, to
best meet this need. The people of
this hospital district must shoulder
the responsibility of providing suitable
living accommodaton for the splendid
nurses who serve them so faithfully
and well. Wingham should pass the
hospital by-law by a large majority.
Be a good neighbour and don't pass
by on the other side.
POPULATION INCREASES
AND TRENDS
The Dominion Bureau of Statistics
revealed recently that during the past
twelve months Canada's population
increased by 301,000, the largest net
gain for any single year in the coun-
try's history. A sharp increase in the
birth rate and a drop in the death
rate are mainly accountable for the
record increase. Inuniftration also
showed a decided. improvement with a
figure of 00,000 to help raise the total
population to 12,853,000.
Immigration helped boost Ontario's
increase to 108,000, which appears a
more spectacular increase than Que-
bec's 80,000, but the latter province's
birthrate always has been historically.
greater. Also the recent increase in
the number of family units in Quebec
