Thursday, August 26th, will be a big
night inthe lives of the children, who
have been attending the Summer
• Playground Programme, That night is
the night of the "Big Shp, when
young Wingham will have its chance
to shine. Among the many things to
be presented will be a junior operetta,
-ballet dancing, singing, tumbling and
gymnastics, water safety demonstra-
:Con, craftdisplay and sale and many

There Is Still Time
Boys and girls who have been away
from the playground still have time
to enter the "Big Show." All they
• have to do is, attend regularly until
August 26th.

Dance At Whitechurch
A Dance under the auspices of the
Women's Institute will be held in the
Community Memorial Hall, White-
church, on Friday, August 20th. Music

The 21st. Rego, Band of Wingham,
presented a concert in Water Tower
Park, Listowel, on Sunday evening,
under the auspices of the "Listowel
Branch of the Canadian Legion, A

Accident Victim Dies
Carman Nickle of the 16th con, of
Howick, who was critically.. injured
when his car crashed into a tree be-
tween Mildmay and McIntosh late on
Friday, died from the injuries receive

WAS CELEBRATED

Grey Township celebrated their Silver
Wedding Anniversary in the form of

nan's two daughters, Mrs. Wilfred
Warwick, 3rd. line isf Morris, and

Grey served the dinner. Twelve guests
Were present. Following the dinner
family snapshots were taken.
About 8.20 p.m., the same evening
guests began to arrive for a surprise
patty. In all nearly fifty people (game

Trophy Won By Wingham Rink
A splendid entry of twenty-one
rinks was presented last Wednesday
afternoon, when three twelve games
of ladies trebles were played in the
annual tournament for the King
Trophy.
Rinks were present from •Toronto,
Stratford, Goderich, Clinton, Luck-
:new, Seaforth and eight rinks were
entered from Wingham.
The trophy and first prize was won
by Mrs. A, M, Crawford, skip, Mrs.
G. MacKay and Miss A. 'Mitchell with
a score of 3 wins plus 16. Second
went to Mrs. Verity manlier players
of Toronto, with 3 wins plus 13, third
to Mrs. Solomon and rink of Luck-,
now with 3 wins plus 10. Fourth to
Mrs. A. R. DuVal skip, Mrs. W. H.
French and Mrs, Geo. Howson, with
2 wins plus 18 and fifth to Mrs.* Cutt
and rink, Goderich, with 2 wins plus.

At Knox Presbyterian Church,
Teeswater, Rev, J. Hardwick,officiat-
ed at a pretty candlelight bridal, unit-
ing inmarriage Jessie, (laughter of
Mrs. E. B.Thacker of Teeswater, with
Lloyd Elmer Sillick, son of Mr. and
Mrs. W. T. Shtick, also of Teeswater.
The bride's cousin, Charles Harper
of, Toronto gave her in marriage, Sil-
houtted against a background of white
gladioli and ferns, the bride was love-
ly in a gown of white brocaded taffeta
with off-shoulder neckline edged with
seed pearls, and matching gloves.
Her finger-tip veil was caught by a
coronet of orange blossoms, and si e

Out Of Four Games
After the series was tied at one
game each the Wingham Bantams
took games in succession from Tees-
water to win their W.O.A.A. baseball
group,
On Friday evening scoring three
runs in the first and second, one in the
fourth and five in the fifth, they gain-
ed the decision by 12-5.
Monday evening they had one big
inning wheg they scored five runs,
winning the game 8-2, and edging
Teeswater out for group honours,
In their guests for the league cham-
pionship they will meet MirdMay in
the first round of the playoffs.

Completing the playing schedule
here last week the Wingham Mercurys
trounced the Clinton Radar team 14-3
in a men's senior "A" softball game.
The win gave Wingham a third posis
tion berth in group one. Wingham
scored six runs in the first and third
asd were never threatened. Jardine
and Fleury were on the mound for
Wingliam. Jardine hit a homer in the
first. Wuttnee retaliated with one in
the 6th for the visitors. •

member of Wingham Revolver Club

HOSPITAL BYLAW
TO BE PRESENTED
TO RATEPAYERS
Council Held Special Session
Monday Evening
The Wingham Town Council held a
special meeting on Monday evening,
will all members . present, except
Couns. Gurney and Clark,
Bylaws No. 1188 and 1190 to auth-
orize construction of sewers on Carl-
ling Terrace, Catharine St., and Diag-
onal Road to service the new houses
in that area, and for erection of sewage
pump station, force main i,nd outlets
in connection with the sewer, were giv-
en first and second readings.
A letter was received from Central
Mortgage and Housing regarding the
construction of the new houses, stating
that the work was proceeding on sche-
dule. The only serious, holdup being
bricks for chimney ocnstruction.
Cord. McGregor addressed the
council in regard to garbage collection
with the extra mileage he required ad-
ditional pay as his costs were increas-
ed, An increase of $12,00 was granted
as long as the new pit was used.
A deputation from the Board of the
Wingham General Hospital headed by
F. L. Davidson, was present and ex-
plained that even with the new wing
which was added a couple of years
ago, the hospital is still greatly over-
crowded, and if hospital service was
to be available something would have
to be done immediately. A new wing,
plus nurses residence and central
heating would cost approximately
$250,000.00, after 'Government grants
were received there would still be a
balance of about $150,000.00 required
to be raised.

a comparative statement, 1942-47
showing the constant growth in all de-

Address and Presentation
On Saturday evening last, Aug. 14th,
a deputation from the Gorrie Presby-
terian Church waited on Mr. and Mrs.
John Sangster, formerly of Fordwich,
in their new home in NVingham. A
short time was spent in social chat
and then Rev. Mr. Hutton called the
meeting to order. A devotional ser-
vice followed after which an address
was .read by Miss Annie Murray and
on behalf of the congregation, Mr. and
Mrs. Sangster were presented by Mrs.
*S. J. Robinson with a tin-light lfloor
lamp in recognition of their many
years of faithful service in the church.
Both marie suitable replies. Brief ad-
dresses were given by Messrs, J. L.
McEwen, N. I,outtit, S. J. Robinson,
and Rev. Mr, Hutton. The meeting.
closed with the benedictinn after
which the visitors returned to their
,homes wishing Mr. and Mrs. Sanester
much prosperity and happiness in the
years to come.

Winning their second group cham-
pionship in two years, Wingham Red
Sox juveniles captured the group one
Juvenile baseball W.O.A.A. title by
downing Ripley 10-5. Wingham now
meets Milverton in the first round of
the playdowns for the juvenile crown.
Leading 4-3 up until the seventh, Rip-
ley received a setback when Lough-
lean doubled in the seventh, scoring-
two runners, to send Ids team ahead.

OBITUARY
George J. Haller
Suddenly, following a heart attack,
George Joseph Haller, died at his
home on Shuter Street hat Wednes-
day, August 11th.
Born in Preston, Ont., he has for
the past twenty-nine years been a resi-
dent of Winghana He was married
in Wingham to the former Margaret
Bradley. A former wood finisher, he
has for many years been projectionist
at the Lyceum Theatre.
He was a member of the Sacred
Heart Church and the Ho:y Name
Society..
Surviving besides his wife, are two
daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Monelda)
Hingston, Guelph.; and Mrs. .Michael
(Lorene) Carere, of London, eiaht
grandchildren, three brothers. Rev.
Father Haller, Kitchener, Aline! of
Kitchener, Cyril of Preston, and two
sisters, Mrs, Fred Grimm Ga:t and

SERVICE AT HOSPITAL
Service Will Be Held at 7,30 p.m.,
On August 27th.
Wingham General Hospital will be
the scene of an interesting service on
the evening, of Friday, August 27th,
when the plaques which have been on
display in the Wingharn Utilities
Commission window will be dedicated,
There are two plaques, one which
contains names "In Memory" and the
other a "For Service" Plaque.
During the raising of funds for the
new Hospital Wing subscriptions of
$500 or over were recognized in this
manner as will all similar donations.
An invitation is extended to the citi-
zens of this district to attend. *

BABY PICNIC
A mother and Baby picnic of the
Cradle Roll of the Baptist Church
was held on Monday afternooh at the
home of Mrs, Wilmer Harcourt.
The Supts. Miss Marjory Falconer
and Mrs. Geo. Scott were in charge.
Mrs. Cenclair Phippen a devoted
Christian mother spoke briefly to the
mothers present, basing her thoughts
on Proverbs 3-6, In all thy ways ack-
