MISUSED WOODLOTS
MEAN VANISHING MAPLES '
A disturbin g warning that unless
drastic conservation measures are
adopted the su gar or hard maple faces
extinction in Western Ontario, was
made recently by Zone Forester C. H.
Zavitz. The problem has been exer-
cising forestry experts increasing ly of
late, and some have felt that they
could virtually seta date by which the
hard maple would have become a tree
of the past, as seldom seen as, the
black walnut.
The hard maple has a every special,
place in the hearts of Canadians and
its leaf is our national emblem. Apart
fro m its commercial value it would ,
be a national disaster if our hard
maples become extinct. Our beautiful
and shady maple trees are a vital part
of both town and country landscapes.
