history. The first loss was paid to
Simon Hicks, father of Dave Hicks,
on January 15th, 1875; the claim was
for $12.50, but the canny directors
settled for $10 even. The ffirst major
claim was made June 5th, 1875, by
John Gamble, for logs of his barn by
fifre. Until 1885 the directors received
no compensation, a motion was then
made that they receive $1.50 per day
for their services, but an amendment
setting the fee at 50 cents a day was
carried. In 1875 the auditors were
granted 50 cents a day and their din-
ner, or $1,00 and supply their own
lunch, Peter Hepinstall of Wallace,
was the first agent appointed aside
