FORTY YARS AGO
Huron's Regiment—The officers of
the 33rd. Regiment held their annual
meeting at Clinton on Thursday. Pre-
parations are being made for the trip
to Quebec to take part in the trecent-

Memorial Conunittee—The first
meeting of the committee appointed
by the Wingham Town Council to
erect a war rtentorial at Wingham was
held on Thursday evening, The com-
mittee is composed of Mayor Elliott,
Reeve Tipling, C, R. Wilkinson, D, E.
MacDonald, Reg, S. Williams, Dr. A,
J, Irwin, Abner Cosens and "Councillor
A. G, Smith. Several Sites in front of
the Town Hall, the Presbyterian
Church lawn and at the corner of John
and Josephine streets at. Diagonal
Road, were considered. The committee
are ,advertising, for .designs and speci-
fications of memorials costing from
$3,500 to $5,000.
Weeks-Kennedy—The marriage of
Mary Elizabeth (Bessie) Kennedy, el-
der daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lauch-
lin of Wingharn,. to Charles
E. Weeks, of Torouto, only son of
Mr. and,Mrs..GeorgeWeeks of Strath-
roy, took place on SatUrday, March
31st, 1923, at St. Paul's Cathedral,
Bloor St., Toronto, by the Rev. Canon
Cody.
MacIntyre-Ross—The home of Mr
and Mrs. John Ross, 2nd. con, of
Kinlossi,was the scene of a very pretty
wedding, when their only daughter,
Annie Mary, became the bride of
William Melford MacIntyre, of East-
end, Sask., and formerly of the 4fh
con. of Kinloss, Rev. K. A. JGollan
officiated.

Keeso-Rellinger—A quiet wedding
was solemnized in the United Church,
Bluevale, on Thursday, March 23rd.,
by Rev. E. A. Mann, of Bluevale, when
Mrs. Vena Rellinger, daughter of Mr.
Jack ,Campbell and the late Mrs.
Campbell, became the bride of Ray
Keese, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Keeso, Listowel.
Gorrie—Messrs. Emerson Shera and
Milford Nash made a business trip to
Toronto on Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs.
Jas. Dickson of the 4th con, entertain-
ed their friends to a house party on
Friday evening. Miss L. Harding of
Orangeville, was the guest of Miss
Annie Douglas, over the week-ends
Wroxeter—Mr. Richard Tennant,
Toronto, is spending a few days at the
borne ofMr. and Mrs. I. Durst. Miss
Lillian Hopper of Wingham, was a

Y.M.C.A. Organized—The meeting
held in the basement of the Baptist
Church on Tuesday evening for the
'purpose of organizing a local branch
of the Y.M.C.A. was well attended.
The following officers were elected:—
Pres., Or. W. J. Price; Vice-Pres.,
W. D. Pringle; Sec., Geo. Mutton;
Treas., Robt. Maxwell. Committee on
Constitution—Dr. P. MacDonald, Geo.
Spotton, W. H. Green, V. J. Hill and
P. Buchanan. The Board'of Directors
will be elected at a future meeting.
The local association starts off with
twenty-two charter members.
Rol st on-Calkins—Mr. Robert Rol-
ston and Miss K Calkins, of Howie%
were united in the bonds of holy mat-
rimony on Wednesday, March 11th,
by the Rev. L. Perrin, at the residence
of Mr. Samuel Ofiffith, 'Turnberry.
Crooks-Dilling—Wednesday of last
week, Rev. E. G, Powell tied the Mat-
rimonial bow at the Parsonage in
Brussels, between :Geo, F. Crooks, of
Atwood, and Miss Ida, daughter of
John Dilling of Cranbrook.
Blyth—Blyth Bowling Club has been
re-organized with the following offi-

Business Change—This week Mr.
Robt, Johnston sold his boot and shoe
business to Mr. \V. H, Willis, of Sea-
forth, who will take possession on the
15th of April.
Skating Event of the Season—A
race of considerable interest to the
sports around town took place at the
rink on Friday evening last, when the
two old time rivals, B, Cochrane and
R. Beattie, skated one mile for a side
bet of po Cochrane won easily
by nearly a lap.
The High Water—The lightning
and thunder storm on Friday night
was the first real storm for this
spring and a large quantity of rain fell.
The water in the South branch of the
river came up pretty high, and Satur-
day evening and Sunday it was not
possible for rigs to go over the road
through the "prairie." •
Minor Locals-To decide who should
pay for an oyster supper, Messrs, IGeo.
Robertson and Jas. D. Barber of East
Wawanosh on Wednesday last, cut,
with a cross-cut saw, a 28 inch Maple
log in 3 minutes and 25 seconds. Mr.
Alex Young's delivery horse made
lively for a few minutes on Josephine
street last Thursday in running away
and the driver, Mr. Leslie Young, was
thrown from the rig and slightly injur-
ed.
Carrothers-Vanalstine—A happy ev-
ent took place in St. James Church,
London, on March 23rd., by Rev. E.
Davis, Dean of Huron, when Mr. Os-
wald Carrothers,eldest son of Post-
master Carrothers of London, was
married to Miss Olive Mae Vanalstine,
formerly of Wingham. ' * *
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
Farrell-Gray—A quiet wedding took
at the Bluevale Manse, on Tuesday,
March 27th, by the Rev. Crawford
Tate, when Miss Myrtle Gray, daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Gray, Turn-
berry, was united in marriage to Mr.
John R, Farrell of Mildmay.
Belgrave—Mr. And. Procter made
a business trip to London this week.
Mrs. T. Procter spent a few days in
Wingham. Mrs. Percy Scandrett is
having an auction sale on April 4th.
Mr. and Mrs. Sturdy of Clinton, have
moved to Belgrave and Mr. Sturdy
has taken a position in Mr. Dan Ged-
des' store.
Bluevale—Mrs. McKee visited for a
few days with her brother, Mr. Geo.
MacDonald. Mr. H. Hammond receiv-
ed a car of coal this week for his
creamery. Mr. Howard Stewart left
on Tuesday for North Bay. Mrs. Thos.
Waddell and daughter of Newton, are
at present visiting with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. L. Jewitt.
Personals•---Mrs. E. R. Harrison
and Miss Agnes Mitchell entertained
the Star Club at the former's home on
Monday evening, Mr. and Mrs. J. J.
Anderson of Kincardine, spent the
week-end at the home of Mrs. Ander-
son's brother, Mr. Alex Reid, Edward
Street. Mrs. Manning and little daugh-
ter, Lois, of London, are visiting with
her mother, Mrs. D. J. Boyd, and sis-
ter, Mrs, Hugh Gilmour, 9th con, of
Turnberry.

Mrs. Morley Bell visited in Winghant
for a few days this week. Mr, Bert
King has purchased a front Mr. Thos.
Bradnock, south of Gorrie. Mr. Dick
Bennett was a visitor with Mr. and.
Mrs. Frank King on Sunday. Mr. and
Mrs. Lorne Laird visited with Mr, and
Mrs. 'Percy Copeland on Wednesday
last.
The Flood is Here--Tile Wingham
prairie and flats are covered with wat-
er from the yearly spring freshet. To
the person who had not seen this
ground flooded 'before, it seems as
though a lake had sprung from some-
where and settled in Witigham to stay,
Mrs. R.' J. Rano, Mr. 'and Mrs. W.
W. Rae and daughter( Joyce, Water-
loo, were week?end guests with their
parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Rae, Mr.
Alfred Edgar spent Sunday at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Breckenridge.
10th 'Line Howick: Mr. and Mrs.
John Fleet were Sunday visitors with
;Nit. and Mrs. Lloyd Griffith, Orange-
ville, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Pritchard
Spent Wednesday afternoon with Mr.
and Mrs. S. Zurbrigg, of Fordwich,
Mrs. Warren Zuurbrigg is spending a
few days with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Wm. Baylor.
Whitechurch—Mrs. Jas, Carr of
Wingham, visited for a few days last
week with her aunt, Mrs. John Craig,
Mr. Bailey and Mr. Frank Vanner and
sons, Carl and Percy, of Wingham,
visited with Mr. and Mrs, Amos Cor-
nelius, Mr. Jas. Ross of Hotyrood,
spent Friday last with his brother, Mr,
R. J. Ross and his sister, Miss Cath-
arine Ross, Mr. Harold Spalding fin-
ished his course at Guelph last week.
Local and Personal—Mr, A. Ti. Wil-
ford is spending a few days in town.
Mrs. 14. C. MacLean was a Toronto
visitor for a few days last week, Mrs.
R. llonar of Montreal, is visiting with
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Haugh.
Miss Sara MacLean returned home
on Friday having visited in Toronto
for the past month.
Enjoyable Event—A very pleasant
social evening was held by the mem-
bers of the Presbyterian Church in
the Forrester's Hall, Belgrave, on Fri-
day night. Mr. A. Porterfield acted as
chairman and the following program
was given: musical number by orch-
estra; duet by Garner Nicholson and
John L. Stewart; dance' by Merle An-
derson; solo, Mrs. Wade; violin solo,
by Ruth Cole; solo by Clark John-
ston; number by the Orchestra; duet,
Freda Jordan and May Young; read-
ings,. Margaret Coulter; sort), Nora
VanCamp; song, Clifford Logan and
a number by the Orchestra.

was solemnized in St. Paul's Church,
Kitchener, on Tuesday, April 4th,
