Courteous Service PHONE 18 WINCH AM PAGE TWO THE WINGHAM ADVANCE-TIMES Wednesday, March 17, 1948 Authorized as Seoond Class Mail Post Office Department Vol. 75 No, 29 BE PROUD OF YOUR TOWN One of the regrettable things too often heard on the streets is the dis- position of young , people to depreci- ate the town which gave them birth, And to run it .down in comparison with the other places. Some do this no doubt from a desire to be smart, whil- st others, having caught a fleeting glance of larger cities, have been at- tracted by the glare of the footlights without having any opportunity of seeing the bare walls that lie beyond the scenery, ceeded in making a name and a place for themselves in the larger eommu»- ities. Small communities may not have the same manifold .attractions that larger cities have, neither are they such deserts in the way of compan- ionship and acquaintances as too often makes the lives of those, residing in a large city, so barren and desolate that they are eager to return to the small towns whenever they can. There are the same varieties of human nature, of good and of evil, in the small ecnn- munities that are to be found in the larger centres, and the use made of their opportunities depends on the in- dividual and not on the place. The young men or young women who run down the home town con- demn themselves and leave a very poor impression. Loyalty to your home town is a trait of character that means much more than appears on the sur- face, and the lack of it shows a very 'miserable, it nut contemptible, .spirit. The greatest man in England today, or, for that matter, in the world, was brought up in a small commenity and learned his lessons at the side of the shoe repair work bench of his uncle. Lloyd George was never ashamed to ackeowledge, his good old uncle and be never referred to his home town as a "helluva town,” (Ed. note—This ed- itorial is reprinted from the Wingliami Advance of March 22nd., 1923, and it is just as appropriate today as it wart a quarter of a century ago.) * IRON CURTAIN THREATENS FINLAND Little Finland, which for a century before 1917 was part of the Czarist, Empire of Russia, is apparently mov- ing toward the same fate as befell CZechoslovakia last month, though not by so direct a route, The Finnish Government has accepted—under ob- vious duress—rather hesitatingly. Stal- in's "invitation" to negotiate a military alliance. Judging by the past, this looks like the beginning of the end of Finland's brief independence. ' When the Bolshevik Revolution shook Russia in 1917, the Finns de- they have no desire to fall under the yoke of the current Moscow dictator- ship, but they will be helpless before the might of their gigantic neighbor. In a short war in 1939-40 they defend- close trade ties and similar living stan- dards, they are finding it feasible to work omit a customs union, but the stlt- Mtge aim is much more ambitious, Soon they hope for a federation and a military alliance of all the Western European countries affected by the Marshall Plan. More than 100,000,000 people in Europe will be affected by the 50-year pact for an economic and military union of Western European democracies. * * LIVING COST INDEX 150,1 Propelled by higher prices for foods, the official cost-of-living index, climbed another 1,8 points during January and came within fractions of the all-time' high of 150,6, established in the in- flationary period that followed the- First Great War, The Dominion Bureau of Statistics reported recently that the index jump- ed from 148,3 at January 2 to 150.1 at February 2, making it au almost foregone conclusion that it will go over the historic 150.6 mark when the February report is released early in April. With rentals released front con- trol there may be a big jump upward in the cost-of-living index. * * KNOW WINGHAM Early History of Winghamn, coned. E ed their land unsuccessfully against a .1 Russian attack, and when they resist- ed Russian invasion a second time af- - ter the Soviet Union became involved m the World War, they became allies of Germany. That unfortunate alliance cost Finland dearly for they were for- ced to surrender 12 per cent of their country to Russia and pay crushing reparations. Now, elated and emboldened by un- checked aggressions and conquests in Eastern Europe and Asia, the glutton- ous Russian Bear is reaching out to completely swallow up little Finland. And once again the Western World looks on and is doing nothing decis- ive. Soon it may be too late to save Europe. * * UNITED STATES OF EUROPE SOON The threat of Soviet Communism is driving the countries of Western Europe into an alliance with acceler- ating speed. Only in union can they find prosperity and security. This fact has been evident to the best European minds for over a generation and back in the 1920's Aristide Briand of France and also Ernest Bevin, among others, marshalled arguments for a "United States of Europe." In recent years, 'Winston dhurchill warned that it was the only possible means of saving Europe and now stat- esmen in all the Western European lands are in favor of immediate union. Recently Britain ' France and the Ben- elux countries, Belgium, the Nether- lands and Luxemberg, met in Brims- : sels and a drafting committee agreed E -on six articles in a treaty designed to bind these nations in a pact to resist 7i1 the further spread of communism.
