PHIL OS1FER OF
LAZY MEADOWS
By Harry J. Boyle
I went to the county town, just a
few days before Christmas to see
lawyer. It was just one of those routine
trips a person has to make every so
often, in order to clear up a lot of
petty, legal matters that we have a
habit of letting drift along.
The young lady in his office told me
to stop over at the courthouse and
see him and she gave me a folder of
papers to take with tne. He was busy in.
Magistrates Court on a ease and asked
me to step into the big courtroom and
wait for him. The courtroom was emp-
ty and I had a good opportunity to oh-
serve it in rather minute detail. l.'s-
wally when you're in a courtroom the
place is full of people. . . those who
are concerned with the business at
hand and those who come like wolves
after a stricken deer because they
smell iblood.
There's something about a court-
room; My experience in them, for
which I am duly thankful, has not been
great but I can still detect the same-
ness in all of them. Perhaps it may be
the severity of the place or the .dusty
windows. On the other hand it may be
the furnishings which look, in most
cases, as if they came from a secon d-
hand sale such as Noah may have had
when he stepped out on dry land and
figured he had too much furniture for
light house-keeping because his Ark
passengers were dashing off.
The floor is oiled and rough and
pounded by many feet, 'The rough hob-
nailed shoes of fanners called to serve
jury duty have scraped and scuffled it.
The saint and the sinner have all fidg-
eted and fumbled bit the hard wooden
benches and Omits and rubbed deep
into the wood. The whole place has
been buffeted, polished and dirtied by

fall mud and spring rain and it has
soaked up summer heat and winter
cold.
Nervous fingers with jacknifes and
hairpins and other weapons have etch-
ed names and meaningless designs on
the oak chair handles and bench
backs. A lonely spider, waiting for the
Spring Assizes no doubt, was busy on
a construction stretching from the
light chandelier to the dais on which
the judge sat.
Even the desk from behind which
the judge dispensed justice hadn't es-
caped marking. "J. D." has carved deep
into the wood and then, like a school-
boy, he had marked the whole thing
very carefully with ink. Somebody else
had drawn a caricature of a man, pos-
sibly a lawyer who had nettled justice.
That court smelled of people and
legal words as dry and dusty and pro-
found as could be found anywhere in
the world. The room seemed to bear
witness to the pleading of accused
people and the arrogance of others .
of happiness of liberation and the un-
happiness of the guilty,
It was another courtroom another
place of justice.
