CLING FOR HELP
Headlines in daily newspapers all
atiMer
the world are begging help for
Wog .fast-diminishing number of tinder-
uwerished, starving, poorly clothed,
.4ritritute 'Canadian children who sur-
vived World War Three. Thank God
that has never happened yet and we
hope and pray that it will never come
to pass, but in this day and age, are
you so ill-advised of the trend of \vorld
affairs and so complacent and indiffer-
ent as to imagine that it never can
happen here?
Through the grace of .God and our
geographical position en the .earth's
surface, Canada has so far escaped the
terrible sufferings and rigors of war.
That is the reason Canadians are for-
tunate enough to be giving help to oth-
er countries instead of asking for it,
Other lands have been the battle-
grounds of the devastating wars
rought up to this date, and it is those
other countires which are today pay-
ing the awful price of war's carnage
and destruction. No words can describe
the awful, pitiful condition of the chil-
dren who still survive in those lands,

DEATHS AND DOLLARS
More public funds-voluntary con-
tributions and government grants-
should be made available as research
funds to assist the medical profession
in combating heart disease, In the Un-
ited States M 1945 public voluntary
contributions for infantile paralysis
amounted to $16,000,000 and there
were only 1,186 deaths; for tubercul-
osis $15,500,000 with 53,000 deaths;
for cancer, $4,000,000 with 177,000
deaths, while heart and blood vessel
diseases, which caused 587,000 deaths,
received only $39,000 of these funds.
Canadian figures in proportion to pop-
ulation vary very little 'from the Amer-
ican.
One out of every three deaths is
due to heart disease. Fatalities are
higher than from the five other leading
causes, cancer, accidents, nephritis,
pneumonia and tuberculosis-combin-
ed. Nearly one out of every two deaths
after the age of 45 comes from this
cause and it is the leading fatal dis-
ease among young people between the
ages of 5 and 19.
The most common type of trouble
are rheumatic heart disease, which
causes 40 per cent of all heart diseases
fight against heart disease and more
research funds are needed to carry
out a three-point program of researeh,
education, and community service
against these maladies, which take at
least one life every ten minutes in
Canada.

KNOW WINGHAIV1
Early History of Wingham cont'd,
(An extract from the Historical Atlas
of the County of Huron, Ont,, publish-
ectinl h87t9)e. When special act (for incorpor-
ation as a town) was defeated, the
people went to work with a will and
secured the necessary local legislation
in the County Council to enable them
to incorporate under the General Act,
The various petitions, resolutions and
by-laws on the subject were duly pre-
pared, but by a error of the village
clerk, they were forwarded to the gov-
ernor-general instead of the lietuenant-
governor for his approval. The gov-
ernor-general was • at the time absent
from the seat of government; and the
'delay which arose in consequence ' of
the above error so shortened the time,
that the three months provided by the
Municipal Act as necessary to inter-
vene between the date of issuing of the
and the municipal elections was en-
croached upon; and thereby the in-
corporation was deferred for another.
year, except by the passage of a spec-
ial act, which was, again prepared, and
again defeated by the political influ-
ence of the people of Lower Wingham
brought to bear against its passage.

Canadians are being asked to hid these
children, Have you done everything
you possibly can to help them?
in this atomic age when globe-circ-
ling rockets will soon place Canada in
the most dangerous position as the
most-likely battleground in the next
war between Soviet Russia and the t'n-
ited States, Canadians have every reas-
on to be apprehensive of the future,
Undoubtedly, in the next war, Canad-
ians will suffer even greater misfor-
tunes than the present war-ravaged
countries. Then the headlines will ap-
pear that we mentioned at the start of
this article,
The response that Canadian children
of that day-your sons and daughters
maybe or perhaps your grandchildren
will receive to their piteous -appeals for
help, will depend on the ability and
generosity of the children and grand?
children who are now appealing to us
for help. The more help we now give
to them the greater their number will
be in our probable time of need, and
the greater their number, the larger
their potential helping power will be.
If you don't possess enough of the
PI- milk of human kindness to unselfishly
help the suffering children of the war-
torn lands today, then selfishly give
them all the aid you possibly can so
that they may help your flesh and
blood at a later day.
