With six playing tricks in sup- port of diamonds, North's correct strat- egy is an immediate raise to five (Hann-1 onds. Considering the bidding thus far , and the distribution of his own hand, he should realize that any weaker raise would not impede the progress of the opponents to game and perhaps to a If North raised to just four diatt- o ndS, East would have the opportunity to make the fine cue bid of five diam- (Aids. I-le thereby would give West the information that lie bad no losers in diamonds, and that he was (mite pre- ' • Pared to play the hand at either five hearts or five spades. Thereafter West would need to be only halt awake to bid six hearts. But Forth's right bid of five diam- onds embarrasses both opponents. East raises to five spades confidently but he anticipates two losers somewhere ' the black suits. `West, in turn expects two losers between diamonds and Clubs. It would be a pure gamble for "either of them to bid the slam and neither will be likely to do it. E.
