The Wroxeter Women's Instiute
at their January meeting voted $25,00
to Save the Children Fund. In order
to give everyone in the village and dis-
trict an opportunity to help in this most
urgent and worthy cause, containers
have been placed in business places in
the village. When shopping for your
own needs please remember the child-
ren of Britain and other lands, who are
hungry. The containers will be once.

Sunday School Annual
The annual meeting- of the United
Church Sunday'Seitool vas held in the
church parlours, on Tuesday
January 6th, with a good attendance of
officers and teachers, Mrs. Munro was
appointed Secretary for the rneeting.
Fifteen dollars was voted to be given
to the Missionary and Maintenance
Fund of the church. The year of 1947
dosed with a balance on band of $18.85,
Officers and teachers for 1948 are as

United Church enjoyed a social even-
ing on Monday night with 30 in at,
tendance, Progressive euchre and two
contests were carried out, The presi-
dent, Miss Jean Moffatt assisted by
Rev. U. E. 'Cronhielm conducted a
short devotional period to open the
meeting.

1041 weather prevailed for the first
of a Series of Three Ice Carnivals to be
held in Wroxeter, !Gorrie and ,Ford*
wich sponsored by the Howick t%ns
'Club, A good turnout gave excellent
support to the contestants in Wrox-
eter Arena on Friday night. Tory
Gregg and Cactus Mac of CKNX Staff,
assisted by Mrs. MacDonald, all of
Wingham, acted extremely well as the
judges. Lion Gordon Gibson assisted
by Secretary Hector Knight were in
charge of the popular Hot Dog and
Coffee Stand, Judged Queen of the
Carnival was Doreen Hutchison, rep,
resenting "Miss Canada.",4 the King of
the Carnival, was Jimmy Wylie with
Top Hat and Tails, .lames of other
prize winners follow: Girls, '7 and un-
der, any costume, Marjorie Mof-
fat, Daisy Gibson, Nancy Newton;
Boys, 7 and under, any eostume, Ian
Howes, Larry Durst; Fancy Costume,

day guests of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund

Mrs. Clarke Sr., was brought home
froth Wingham General Hospital' last

of her son, Vern and Mrs. Clarke,
Mr. Roy Johnston, Stratford Normal,
spent-last week. practice teaching with
Mr, Harold Hamilton of Wrceceter
Public School, while Miss Agnes
Wearring of Toronto Normal, Spent
the week with Mrs. Wm. Wright, tea.,

Women's Institute
Mrs. J. N. Allen opened her home
on Wednesday afternoon for the Jan-
uary meeting of Wroxeter Women's
Institute. Mrs. H: MacKenney was
in the chair and opened the meeting
with the singing of the Ode and re-
peating of the Lord's 'Prayer in unison.
Mrs. W. T. MacLean presented the
minutes and also read many letters of
thanks from those receiving Christmas
Cheer Boxes. Mrs., Vern Denny re-
ported 20 Shut-ins remembered at the
Christmas Season. Gifts of money to
help the. work along were received
from Mrs. Eli Bolt, Mrs. Edward
Jacklin. Twenty-five Dollars were vot-
ed to Save the Children Fund. Mrs.
Reg Pacey gave very interesting Cur-
rent events including the new B.C.Y.
vaccine for the prevention of Tubercu-
losis. Defences against cancer have
doubled and trebled in the last few
months. By the newest tests it is pos
sible to find cancer anywhere in the
body. Television, at present there are
25,000 'receiving sets in operation in
the London Area. The closing of W.
N.R.R.A., the housewife's dollar and
pork and beef prices. The new better
Homes Contest, and closed with choice
verses on the New Year by Horatio
Nelson Powers, Miss Hazelwood con-
ducted a surprise contest when she ask-
ed all members to open their hand

Mrs. Cohvill was the .winner, having
31 articles. Mrs. J. N, Allen won the
consolation for having the least num-
ber of articles. Community singing was
enjoyed with Mrs, J. N. Allen at the
piano. The Royal Wedding as describ-
ed by Matthew Halton was beautifully
read by Mrs. John Colwill. Miss Hazel-
wood favored with a piano solo, The
Anniversary Waltz. The Roll Call, an
interesting item on the British Empire
(brought a fine response. Tea was see.

Mrs. Vern MacDonald is spending

Two well attended prayer meetings
were held in the United Church dur-
ing the past week. On Tuesday even-
ing Rev. U. E. Cronhielm was the
speaker and on Thursday evening Rev.
G. Howse of Gorrie was in charge.
Mr. Verh Denny, who is with the
C.P.R. snow plow gang since the re-
cent storm spent Sunday at his home
here. Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Edgar of
Fordwich, were also, Sunday guests at
the Denny home.
About 100 were present at the Town
Hall on Wednesday night when Nat-
ional Film Board with the Women's
Institute as sponsors showed an inter-
esting series of Educational Films, Mrs.
H. V. MacKenney welcomed the aud-

were made for transportation of the
four-months-old child of Mr. William
Sangster, Howick, to Victoria Hospi-

Members of Wroxeter Branch Wo-
men's Institute have a near project for
the year. The purchase of a new cur-
tain tor the Town Hall Stage, Mrs.
Munro, Mrs. W. T. MacLean, Mrs.
H. V. McKenney and Mrs. Wm. Hart
have arranged a progressive euchre for
January 14th, at Mk Am., in the Red
Cross Rooms to which all will be cor-
dially welcomed. Ladies arc asked to

of January 8th. Plans Were completed
for Ice Carnival, Letters of apprecia-

mond and Golden Wedding Anniver-
saries. The Lions Supper meeting will

of Patrick tynett a highly tespected
citizen of Turtiberry, in his 84th year,
