Firemen quickly quelled a blaze at the home of Ken Loucks at 50 Main street. Fire in the insulation and ceiling joists began when Mr. Loucks was.soldering an outside water tap. Fire chief Gary Middleton said his men knocked a few bricks out of the outside wall and knocked a hole in the basement ceiling and were able 'to keep the fire from spreading. Arnold and Alice Keller of Shipkn celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, McGillivray • township council learned at the December meeting that • rates for water from the provincial system will in- crease from 32.7 cents to 35.3 cents on the main line. The township will absorb the increase and not raise the rates to its water customers. Chuck Godkin, Ministry of Intergovernmental affairs attended regarding the hiring of a treasurer. Council agreed to com- plete loops on the waterline from South of Brinsley to connect with the line on Concession 8 E,C,R., and from County Road 24 north on concession 2-3 to connect with the existing line at Andy Thompson's property. There is suffiqient pipe on hand to complete these loops. W.G. Amos attended before council with a Group Insurance proposal for the road employees. He was instructed 'to obtain prices and submit them to council for consideration. Lawrence Amos attended concerning the re-zoning of 60 acres under the Pits and Quarries Act, Bruce Karr discussed the problem of water on the Maynard property. A plan is to be prepared and sub- mitted to council. There are approximately $3,000. subsidy dollars left. Council agreen to purchase grader bIades, tires and culverts in order to use the subsidy funds. A new Engineer is to be appointed on the Rees Drain. Barry Heaman and Jake Lagerwerf plan to attend the New Councillors' Seminar in Chatham in March. The proposals on Con- cession 6-7 E.C,R. were discussed. Council reached an agreement and instructed Bruce Karr to proceed. The project will be spread out over a two year period, with the road to be opened in 1981 and- additional road work completed in 1982, Council adopted a culvert policy for the township. There were two 'on December 23, the first in- volving a vehicle operated by Robert Burnbridge, St. Marys. He was eastbound and approaching the Devil's Elbow bridge on sideroad 20- 21 in Stephen when the vehi- cle skidded on ice and hit the bridge. Damage was listed at $1,- 000 by Constable Ed Wilcox. The second collision on Tuesday was on Highway 4 just south of Exeter. A southbound vehicle driven by Michael Veal, Hensall, was in the process of passing another vehicle when the latter forced him into the ditch, where the Veal vehi- cle struck a tree. Minor injuries were sustained by the driver and a passenger, William Cameron, of Edmonton. Damage was estimated at $3,000 by, Constable Jack Straughan. There was one accident on the day before Christmas, it occurring on Highway 83 just east of Exeter and in- volved vehicles operated by Paul Manning, RR 1 Bolton, and Jobb Stewart, RR 3 Ex- eter, Manning was over- taking Stewart when the latter turned left. There were no injuries and damage was set at $3,400 by Constable Wally 'l'omasik. The other accident of the Week occurred on Saturday When a parked car owned by Donald Masse, Zurich, Was struck by an uriknown vehicle oh Highway 84 in Zurich. Damage to the Masse vehicle was listed at $400 by Constable Straughan. Foitr thefts While the number of area accidents was relatively low, the police were called to investigate tour thefts. Richard Vanderhoek, KR 3 Zurich, reported the theft of a homemade ladder from a garage behind the bakeshop in Zurich, The ladder, valtied at $10, had been intended as a Christmas gift. Three summer notnee were victimized in break, enter and thefts. A summer home on con- cession 13 in Stephen owned by Donald Dasugharty, Lon- don, was entered and a rifle, shotgun and gun rack stolen. The items were valued at. $220 and Constable Wilcox is in charge of the investiga- tion.
