To make it easier to
control the "dog problem"
which is widespread, across
Ontario, the government has
set regulations to be followed
in each municipality with the
municipal council
establishing the amount of
the fine, which is subject to
government approval,
Councillors Jim Papple
and John Br ownridge
thought the $50 fine was
steep but agreed to it when
clerk treasurer, John
McLachlan explained that

responsible for many of The

township office. (A person
complaining about a dog at

who will in turn alert the
animal control officer for
action),

On Christmas Eve my
family and I sat around the
fire singing Christmas
Carols. As the fire started to
burn 'slowly out I thought
about the Christmas Tree. It
was very beautiful. I had red
light bulbs and ' red
decorations on it.
Shiny tinsel glittered as it
hung on the tree. There were
many presents under the
tree, I looked outside and
saw white fluffy snow falling
from the sky.
It began to get late so I
went to bed. All night

Council approved a new
policy on tile drain loans
which calls for approval up
to $20,000 per year even if the
farmer does more than
$20,000 of work draining his
land, and the work has to be
done in the year applications
is made. In 1980 the township
was only allowed, $75,000 to
be distributed on ap-
plications for drainage work
across the township. Two
years ago the government
had been allowed up to
$200,000.
A request from James
Robson of Vanastra was
refused for an asphalt base
for an outdoor skating rink.
Young James requested
help to make the skating rink
in a small municipal park in
Vanastra so that he and
other children at Vanastra
could have a place to play
ilockey because "the police
had warned him not to play
hockey on the roadways".
Members of council
agreed asphalt was not a
proper base for a rink at any
rate, as ice melt quickly on
the black surface. A cement
base or tramped snow.makes
a better base, they said.
James is to be notified
council is unable to provide
the outdoor rink for him and
his fellow hockey players,
On the recommendation, of
T.R. Clarksqn, a provincial
livestock evaluator for the
ministry of agriculture, $400
was paid by council to Mrs.
Edith Dale Baker, RR 4
Clinton, a Tuckersmith
sheep owner, Mrs. Baker
had a problem with an area
dog at her sheep this past
spring about lambing time,
Mrs. Baker said that
people, who let their dogs
run loose, do not seem to
understand that at this time
the value of a sheep can
range from $400 to $6,000 for
one animal. She said the
compensation paid doesn't
cover her full loss.
The general meeting was
completed when the council
went into committee of the
whole in camera to discuss
staff salaries for 1981. The
closed meeting was called
for -by Councillor Robert
Broadfoot who said salaries
should not be,discussed with
the press present.

dreamt about Christmas
presents. Most of the night I
couldn't sleep because I was
so excited, Everytime I woke
up, it seemed like morning
would never come, I couldn't
wait any longer so I got up.
I rapped on my brother's
door. He answered and told
me to come in. He couldn't
sleep either so we both
played a game, After a while
we decided to quit because
we were so excited so we
talked about what we
thought we were going to get.
About eight o'clock we got
our parents up. We all
opened our presents and
played for a while. At three
o'clock we had company for
Christmas Dinner. We sat
down and filled ourselves
with turkey, potatoes,
Christmas cake and stuffing.
After supper we talked and
our company went home, We .
had a very'merry Christmas.
SANTA COMES TO
MY HOUSE
By Tammy Bell
Grade 6
Hensall P.S.
'Twas the night before
Christmas,
and all were in bed
"Santa is coming", Daddy
had said.
So we fell off to sleep,
without even a peep
I awoke that night
And not a soul was in sight
I looked out the window and
there,
there was snow
But what was downstairs, I
didn't know,
So I crept down the stairs
without a sound
I looked around the corner
and there to my surprise,
right in front of my eyes, was
Santa
I said, "Merry Christmas,"
and he said it too
So I say "Merry Christmas,"
especially for you.
