'I love Christmas' Hi ! Mary's letting me get a * word in edgewise again — she talks about me so much, that I said it was time I had a chance to defend myself. Oh, yes, I read all about me in the paper -- you'd be sur- prised what I see in the T-A when it's on the floor under my supper dish. For those of you who missed my Christmas column last year, and my first birthday column in August, I'm Pepper. I'm , black and white, and I weigh about 60 pounds. I can be very tall when I stand up on back legs and stretch out.1 live with Mary and Victor. I'm think I'm a person, but people often call' me a dog. Its very confusing. I'm also finding it very difficult to maneuver my hands, er, paws, on these typewriter keys. I wish Mary would bring her electric typewriter home from the office, so I wouldn't have to struggle with the old por- table. Better yet, she could take me to work with her, Anyway, back to my dilemma. I'm almost positive I'm human, but Mary and Victor keep doing little things to me to make me feel like a dog. For example, they push me off their nice, •com- fortable bed and make me sleep. on a mat in the basement. Oi they sit at the table and eat roast beef — later rm just given a bone. During the day, they tie me to a dog house, when I could be inside laying on the sofa watching soap operas. Worst of all, they ignore Me when I'm talking to them. And I'm sure I'm speaking English. k Little things like these might tend to make me believe I was just a dog if I didn't know better. I 'must admit, however, that I have noticed one difference between me and humans, They don't smell. Oh, sure, some of them stink -- what trying to say is that. they don't sniff, They just don't know how to use their noses. I mean, how do you know you want to be friends with a guy, if you haven't smelled him first? Humans will just walk up and shake hands with a stranger, without sniffing them out. You can tell a lot about a person with just a few sniffs. For example, you soon know if they've got a pet of their own at home, and that will tell you whether or not they'll be friendly. You can usually tell what they had for lunch, and sometimes you can even figure out where they've been. Humans don't give their noses enough exercise. Oh, yeah, this was sup- posed to be a Christmas' column, wasn't it? Well, back to smelling. That's how I knew Christmas was coming. I could smell it in the air. My first hint was the fresh, frosty smell outdoors. Sure enough, it snowed the next .b e MARY ALDERSON day. Then I could smell pine when I came in the house — arid there was a Christmas tree in the living room. I. sniffed the tinsel garland, but that didn't tell me much. It just tickled my nose and made me sneeze. Soon after that I could smell something delicious coming from the oven. I sat around the kitchen licking my lips and wagging my tail, and eventually Victor gave me a cookie. He used. tp call Milkbones cookies — but now I know there's 'a big dif- ference. Later, I sniffed out all the packages under the tree, Soon my nose found one with my name on it, I tried not to let on, because I didn't want Mary and Victor to know that I know -- but I'm pretty sure I'm getting some new raw hide chew sticks thig year, So I've already sniffed out a good Christmas. And I hope all of you smell a Merry Christmas, too! ••waAkt,wi:si;g44v&-,161 .;;4:3,,Nizw,yitzvkz.p..;;a5..maiximNaz•siii:1479)1a:)4,4:51:me:ma2:31 • '•'..tr•PWr .. .. -r '.7.. t, - - -ikicm .. ihe spirit of Christmas is everywheie 1 .: filling the world with happiness and joy.. , We hope your holiday is brimming .11 with all good things. § § The Management and Staff at V.L. THE SHEPHERDS FIND JESUS By Robbie Humer Grade 5 Grand Bend Public 'School Once on a cold dark night while the shepherds watched their flock, a blinding appeared in the sky. The shepherds were frightened and gathered together to'see what would happen. They waited, for a long time, when all of a' sudden the Angel of the Lord came down to tell them great news, She said, "Do not be afraid for I have great news, a baby boy is being born this very minute in a stall in Bethlehem," So what?" said the shepherd's, But this baby is the ,son of the Lord," If that was true there was no time to waste. They got their belongings and rushed to Bethlehem. When they found the stable they knelt down and wor- shipped the baby boy and then left to guard their sheep once again. 4 Trerid olds and new go our wishes for a wonderful Chrisfmas.season.
