American wrestlers
dominate local meet
Wrestlers from London
and Michigan converged on
Exeter Saturday for the
second annual Canada-
U.S.A. wrestling exchange.
Participating in the series
of dual matches held at
South Huron District High
School were South Huron,
Ranting Secondary School of
London, Columbia Central
High' School of Columbia,
Michigan and Napoleon High
School of Napoleon,
Michigan.'
The two American schools
dominated the competition
but South Huron wrestlers
did win a total of three
matches.
In the 90.5 pound class
Paul Overholt won two
contests while in the 127
pound division Frank Ver-
maeten had one win against
his American competition,
South Huron wrestling
coach Doug Ellison said he
was quite pleased with the
day-long event and noted the
exchange of ideas and the
acquiring of new friends was
the most valuable aspect of
the exchange,
Also competing for the
South Huron squad were
wrestlers from Goderich and
Medway.
The competition was
opened with the piping in of
the four teams by high school
teacher Carl Mills and was
followed with remarks by
Exeter Mayor Bruce Shaw
and school principal Joe
Wooden.
Ellison said the big dif-
ference in wrestling between
the two countries was the
amount of experience which
the American wrestlers have
accumulated by the time
they reach high school.

Come hack, Howard
Okay, Howard, Yeu can come back to the air
Waves and we will try not to complain too much about
the multitude of statistics you spout out.
That was a personal message for Howard Cossell
felleWing Saturday's experiment of televising a foot-
ball game 'without the benefit /of announcers.
The net work producer says he was pleased with
the first attempt of letting the fan know what's going
on from the field announcer, the officials and graphics.
We didn't see all of the game, but, there were a
number of times when one had to guess what had
happened. In one instance, the referee signalling a
touchdown was out of range of the television Camera
and listeners or more rightly so watchers didn't know
for sure until the teams lined up for the extra point,
So, it appears at least for sometime we will be
back to listening to the play by play descriptions and
let's not hear too much flack about Howard and his
continuous banter which at times is hard to take.
Should be exciting
This week's annual Exeter novice hockey
tournament should provide plenty of exciting action as
14 teams will be participating at the South Huron Hee
Centre.
The first game of the two day event starts Boxing
Day morning at 10 a.m. and play continues throughout
the day and into Saturday • with the championship
games going at 3, eand 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon,
The first game Friday at 10 a.m. pits Zurich
against Dorchester followed an hour later by Seaforth
against Parkhill. Strathroy meets. Walkerton at 12
noon and Listowel takes on the Burlington Chiefs at 1
p.m.
The first game for the host team the Exeter Wax-
ers will be at 2 p.m. when they do battle with London
Stoneyhrook.
Zurich grad out west
Hobert Willert who was an outstanding performer
with the Zurich bantams and their top scorer a couple
of years ago is doing well in junior hockey in Western
Canada.
Hobert, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Willert of
Zurich is in his first season with the St. Pauls
Canadians of the northern Alberta junior "B" league.
At the moment, Hobert is the second leading
scorer on the St. Pauls team and according to the team
program is a player to watch.
The program says, "At six feet and 165 pounds

• he should be one of the leading point getters on the
club.
Before landing with St. Pauls, a community 240
miles north of Innisfail Alberta, Willert tried out with
the Calgary Wranglers, a junior "A" team, but, was
told he needed more seasoning.
His father Edgar Willert said the ReginaPats have
also shown an interest in Hobert who is living with
former Hay township clerk-treasurer Wayne Horner
and his wife Helen in Innisfail a north-eastern Alberta
community.
Hobert now in grade 12 has three years of junior
eligibility remaining.
While on the subject of former Zurich hockey
players we should report that Kerry Bedard who
played with the Exeter junior Hawks last year is play-
ing with St. Clair College of Windsor this year.
Another Pooley report
According to the latest communique from Ohio
State University in Columbus, Ohio, Paul Pooley has

one fan thought the of-

northern division leadership.
Bombers win easily
Belmont scored five times
in the final period in Friday's
contest to win going , away
after the Hawks had held the
powerful southern division
leaders to a .6-3 lead at the
end of two periods.
Four of the goals in the

fans were upset at the of-
