Grand Bend school representative Robert Clay said that this was just a preliminary meeting. The group, which is made up of three board trustees, and a representative from each of Grand Bend, Kinnaird and Bosanquet schools, is trying to identify areas which they plan to look at in the study. The next meeting ,will be. I really felt badly when I heard about the murder of John Lennon. I wasn't grieving to the point of some of his fans, but with all the old Beatles' favourites on the radio I have been overcome with a severe case of nostalgia. It is, to Ifs elhe'Rer worked cliche, the end of an era. Sure, the era ended back in 1970 when the Beatles disbanded, but many of us had nursed the hope of a reunion -- once more for old times' sake. Yet I knew they • could never be the same -- as John Lennon said just before his death, would you really want to go back to high school? I was a' junior ileatlemaniac back in 1964 when they first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. I was only nine at the time, and I can remember having to ask my parents if I could stay up late enough to watch them, Then I pulled the foot stool within a few inches' of the old boxy. black and white T.V., just to make sure I didn't miss anything. I remember that it was hard to hear 'the words to the songs, because of all the girls screaming. I was still playing with Barbie dolls, when I first fell in love with the Beatles. My best girl friend and I made fuzzy wigs for our Ken dolls, so that they could have Beatle haircuts. We glued the fuzzy stuff over top of Ken's brush cut. My aunt even made a Beatle style suit for Ken -- the jacket had no collar or lapels. My friends and I saved any money we could get our hands on to buy 45 rpm records. I think the records cost about 99 cents then. The song that started out "Close your eyes and I'll kiss you" was always my favo. urite. held at Kinnaird school on January 14. In. the meantime, Clay says that the Grand Bend committee supporting him has met twice.. That group hopes to put together a sur- vey, which they intend to distribute door to door in the area served by Grand Bend school, The survey will attempt to determine how parents see the quality of education 'in Grand Bend, and what direction the enrol- ment may take in the future. Clay said that the school study committee is supposed .to 'come, up with the recommendation for the board.of education by March We practically wore those records out playing them on those scratchy old portable record players. I also' had a Bekle bracelet, It was a genuine imitation gold chain with a little gold charm on it. There l was, a plPtur 1, c pf the "fab four'on the th rim,1 think it was a souvenir the4CNE. I wore the bracelet everywhere for a long time. I can remember my mother asking me if it was really necessary to take the Beatles with me to Sunday School. I kept a Beatle scrap book. It is now carefully tucked in a box in our attic. The pages' are very:tattered, and the scotch tape has disin- tegrated. But. I still have it. When I made up my mind that I needed a scrapbook to keep my Beatle pictures in, my mother gave me some sheets of newsprint. I glued 'or taped everything in place, and we stapled all the sheets together, I'm sure that at that time, my mother thought that the scrap book, idea was just a one afternoon thing, and would soon be forgotten. If she had known that I would still be clipping and saving in 1980, I think she would have bought me a proper scrap book. The scrap book is made up mainly of pictures' and stories from Life and Look magazines in the sixties. I seldom had money for fan magazines, but occasionally I would see such a magazine at the Ipperwash casino, and if it• had plenty of Beetle pictures in it, I would go hunting pop bottles on ' the beach, til I had enough money to buy it. Bubble gum cards also makeup a good portion of the scrap book. For a fickle, you could get four Beatle cards and a stick of gum, The cards were all autographed, too. I made my last entry into the book in 1970 -- a newspaper clipping about the Beatles breaking up. This week I'll be adding the clippings from last Wed- nesday's newspapers, -- my first addition in 10 years, I even found myself buying a Playboy magazine. It was redommended to me because it contained an excellent interview with John Lennon - his last. Many memories have been recalled this week, with so many radio stations playing Beatle, music. Remember those grade eight sock hops to the sounds of "She's just 17?" Or roller skating to "Back in the USSR"? Or dancing at a high school dance to the sounds of "Something"? Why, just last week at the Christmas party, we were dancing td OoBlaDee, OoBlaDah! Thank you r John Lennon, for the memories, This Christmas why not give a special gift to, that special someone. In other business: --The rec committee decided to ask the Optimist club to take over the maintenance of the old river bed skating rink. The public utilities commission will be Contacted concerning the lighting of the skating rink. --The rec committee decided to approach council about the hiring of lifeguards for the summer, Committee members felt that life guards should be their responsibility. They also suggested that the lifeguards be-asked to purchase their own equipment, because of the damage to the village's equipment in the past, --It was decided to ask two people who had previously requested joining the rec committee if they are still interested, It 'was also suggested that a member of the Optimists club be ap- pointed, as well as a new member from the Chamber of Commerce to replace Mae Morenz, --The committee planned to contact Shirley Page regarding a Christmas tree for the Christmas party.
