Peace was the theme of the November meeting of Exeter United Church Women. Ann Brodie opened the meeting by reading part of president. Lincoln's in- augural address. Alma Langford read the, scripture and commen4d that there is much strife in the world and much in our own neighbourhood with racial discrimination. Countries have large stores of weapons; there is division within the church or Jesus and people keep old rivalries alive. Great miracles for peace could be done by individuals, She con- cluded with the prayer "Let there be peace on, earth and. let it begin with me"-. Dorothy Einkbeiner led in prayer. in her reading Marzetta Earl said "God gave control of the earth to man and gave man a soul. But man, still cultivates a spirit of disco- tent, greed and envy between nations, with a lack of love and peace. If nations would live the golden rule we would have peace. Myrtle Brock pointed out that we need to find a sanc- tuary from world strife and that can be found in God's presence. Alma Langford and Ellen Forsythe sang a duet accom- panied by Ann Brodie, Dorothy Bern gave a very interesting account of the passion Play which she had seen recently. Marilyn Johnson con- ducted the, business and Making ornamental candles is a simple and rewarding family activity. Here is.advice from crafts specialists at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food:, You'll need wax, wicks, dyes, thermometer, saucepans, molds, water and lots of newspapers. Candle-making wax is available' in large blocks or small packages. Adding a small amount of beeswax or stearic acid gives candles a better floss and longer life. Choose a wick of the correct thickness for the diameter of the mould you select. Dyes are available in cake. or li- quid form. These supplies can be purchased from craft and hobby stores. Always cover your work area completely with newspapers and wear an apron to protect your clothing. To heat wax, use a double boiler. Do not place wax over direct heat. Check the temperature of the wax with a candy thermometer once it is heated. For plastic moulds pour at 75 degrees Celsius (170 degrees Fahrenheit), for metal moulds at 95 C (20 degrees F). Don't splash water into the melted wax. If the wax catches fire, cover with the lid or 'smother with baking soda. Simple moulds can be found around the house — glasses, plastic cartons and paper cups, for example. They will give you practice in positioning wicks, pouring the wax and perhaps chang- ing colors. To decorate your candles, you can apply dried flowers to, the surface in interesting designs. For another effect, use glue or clear nailpolish to make designs and then sprinkle with glitter. Rib- boris and braids can be glued to the surface to give added decoration. An experienced married man is one who can tell when his wife comes to the end of one argument and begins another. To give moulded candles a shiny, protective coating and to help prevent dripping, dip candles, in hot wax con- taining .up. to 30 percent stearic acid, This finish, is, good for undecorated sur- faces. From simple moulds, you can progress to rolling or dipping candles. A sheet of beeswax cut to size and roll- ed around a wick makes a simple and attractive can- dle. More intricate decora- tion can be printed into the surface with metal tools. The possibilities for candle-making are limited only by your imagination.
