After their first three games, Paul Pooley leads the Ohio State scorers with three goals and three assists while twin brother Perry has one goal and one assist. The latest news release says one of the heroes in. Saturday's 4-3 overtime win over U,S. International Was "freshman Paul Pooley of Exeter Ontario who scored a pair of goals and assisted on the other two." The Pooleys in addition to their good scoring abiltities have also showed aggressiveness in their play. Paul has picked up four penalties and Perry has been sent to the penalty box three times. All have been for minor infractions of two minutes each, Same story again The script writers for the final eastern Canadian Fciotball League game Sunday needed very little im- agin ation, For the third straight year the Toronto Argonauts went into Hamilton needing a victory to get into the playoffs and for the third straight time they failed. One Toronto writer on the weekend while talking , about theArgos for next year suggested coach Willie Wood would be making very few changes for the 1981 season. One little problem could crop up over the winter that would change that thinking of coach Wood. He may not be around for next year. It's quite ironical when one stops and thinks of the early season performances this year of three of Toron- to's professional sports teams. The Blue Jays were off and running in the month of April and early May, but, fell back to a mediocre record although they did win the most games in their short four year existence. The same thing happened to the Argos. They came out of the starting gate aflying and a few of their staunch supports were talking Grey Cup. But, when the final tallies were made Sunday afternoon the Argos were the only CFL players in the east not readying for playoff competition. And what about Harold Ballard's Toronto Maple Leafs. They looked like world beaters in their first few games and for a few days were leading the overallNHL standings. They have looked well short of world beaters dur- ing their recent western trip and against the Colorado Rockies at Maple Leaf Gardens Saturday night. The Leafs were facing big odds in. Saturday's game against Colorado. At least six of the Itockies are ex- Maple Leafs and were more than psyched up to show their best before their former fans. The same story keeps cropping up for the Leafs so far this season. They need another top notch goal tender to at least spell off the overworked Jiri Crha or possibly replace him. Football final Saturday As the result of an undefeated season, the South‘ Huron District School senior Panthers will have home field advantage in Saturday's Huron-Perth Conference football final. The Panthers opposition for the grand cham- pionship will again be the Goderich Vikings, but, this time the big difference could be that the game is being played in Exeter. In recent years, the situation was reversed with Goderich finishing in first place and getting the final game in their own back yard. Saturday's final game is bound to be an exciting contest, In their only meeting this year, South Huron won by a score of 7-3. That game was closer than the score may indicate. The only seven points for South Huron came in the third quarter when Doug Hoffman recovered a Goderich fumble on a kick and took it two yards for a touchdown. For many years, the senior battles between South Huron and Goderich have been very intense and ex- citing and there is no reason to believe Saturday's en- counter will be any different. The game starts at 1 p.m. at the South Huron field. Best of luck to coaches Ron Bogart and Casey Cook and their charges. Should be interesting Do you get disturbed occasionally with the carryings on of Howard Cosell on a sports broadcast? Well, come December 20 you will have a chance to watch a football game without listening to Howard ramble on. In fact you will be able to watch the game without listening to anyone. That's right. The National Broad- casting Company will televise the Saturday December 20 game between the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins without announcers. A NBC spokesman said, "It will be a realtest of our camera coverage as well as our audio coverage. While there will be no play-by-play announcer or colour commentator, Bryant Gumbel will provide periodic updates." All the television viewers actually will hear will be the same sounds as if you were sitting in the best seat in the stands. The ABC ratings for that day only shortly before Christmas will likely be the best they have ever ex- perienced as millions of football fans and possibly Howard Cosell haters watch to see what happens with this very unusual experiment. An indication of the talent on the South Huron team this year is the fact provincial selectors have asked for two team members to attend team trials. Asked to try out for the all- Ontario team are -Barb Rader • and Karen Brand. Although they placed fifth overall in provincial com- petition over the weekend, the South —Huron Panthers were one of only two teams in the tournament with no goals scored against them and had the fourth best goals for average. .Th OFSAA tourney started in London Friday with the 16 top teams in the province in attendance. In their first start South Huron held Toronto area champions from Stephen Leacock school to a scoreless tie. Next came a 4-0 victory over St, Catharines with Bonnie Keys scoring all four goals. Saturday Bonnie Keys scored the only goal in a 1-0 South Huron win over Gloucester of Ottawa. After three games South Huron was tied with Stephen Leacock of Toronto in their pool,Goals scored were then reviewed and the ,Toronto team advanced because of two more goals scored. The South Huron team wrapped up the Huron-Perth schedule with 14 out of a possible 16 points and won the conference tournament held in Stratford.
