Electors of
Tuckersmith
As a life-long resident of Tuckersmith and
as a farmer who has been actively involved
in township organizations and activities I
realize the necessity of sound municipal
government. I feel my experience can be
helpful to the citizens of Tuckersmith and
for this reason I am seeking a seat on the
municipal council. I ask for your support at
the polls on November 10th and if elected
I assure you of my conscientious attention to
the concerns of all parts of the township.

Pen checking your beef
feedlot should entail A
WALK, .A STOP, A LOOK, A
LISTEN. It is a very impor-
tant part of feedlot manage-
ment.
It should be done three or
four times a day with new
arrivals, and at least daily
once they are settled and on
feed.
Some ideas that may help
you are -
WALK: slowly,
STOP: stand or sit on a
post for a few minutes,
LOOK: observe those cat-
tle. Look ahead and behind
you. Sick cattle will stand
out, They appear droopy,
sleepy eyed and droopy
eared, Normal animals are
alert, bright eyed, with little
or no tear staining on the
face, They are inquisitive.
They will have a clean and
moist nose and mouth, with
very little nasal discharge.
Look for the loners. Sick
animals will often bd•found
alone. However, with ner-
vous disorders or blindness,
they may try to stay with
penmates. Gaunt cattle are
also abnormal. Get cattle
up. It is quite normal for
them to rise, stretch and
defecate. Check manure
droppings. Watch for undue
nasal discharge. They are
clues to respiratory
problems.
LISTEN: for sniffling,
coughing, groaning and
grunting. Lameness can be
identified by listening to
gait. Once suspected, mark
the animals so they can be
identified for treatment.
Record treatment, date, an-
tibiotic or vaccine and
dosage given.

walk the pen is, to enter at
one corner, walk the
perimeter first, back to
point of entry. Then walk
back and forth side to side
working your way to the rear
of the pen. Them walk
diagonally back out to point
of entry.
Remember - move slowly.

Agricultural Rep,
How much is your
manure worth?
With today's prices of fer-
tilizer, manure has changed
from a waste product to a
valuable commodity. To get
the most value from
manure, you have to know
what it contains.
Manure can be 'tested
through the Soil Testing and
Plant Analysis Lab, Univer-
sity of Guelph. Sample
bottles and information
sheets may be obtained from
the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food of-'
fice,Clinton, at $1.50 per kit.
Liquid Manure - Liquid
manure in storage should be
mixed well before sampling.
From the' thoroughly mixed
manure take a dipper full
from each of several parts of
the storage and place in a
plastic pail. Mix the contents
of the pail thoroughly and
then transfer 1/2 litre to the
enclosed shipping container
or to a wide mouth one litre
or 32 oz. plastic jar. If
of on-farm training.
Anyone who is at least 17
and has at least a grade eight
education and been out of
school for one year may
apply.
There is no coursp fee for
applicants eligible for
Canada Manpower Training
Allowance.
The young dairy farmers
training program runs for
four weeks with classes five
days a week. Applicants for
this course should already be
employed by, or operating a
dairy farm and preference
will be given to applicants
who do not have post-
secondary agricultural
education.

Solid Manure - Clear .a

plywood, Take samples frOM
various parts of the pile, as
deeply as feasible, and place
on the mixing surface. If
manure is' being spread on,

each of a number of loads.
Using a fork or shovel, chop
