T-A photo Pen checking your beef feedlot should entail A WALK, .A STOP, A LOOK, A LISTEN. It is a very impor- tant part of feedlot manage- ment. It should be done three or four times a day with new arrivals, and at least daily once they are settled and on feed. Some ideas that may help you are - WALK: slowly, STOP: stand or sit on a post for a few minutes, LOOK: observe those cat- tle. Look ahead and behind you. Sick cattle will stand out, They appear droopy, sleepy eyed and droopy eared, Normal animals are alert, bright eyed, with little or no tear staining on the face, They are inquisitive. They will have a clean and moist nose and mouth, with very little nasal discharge. Look for the loners. Sick animals will often bd•found alone. However, with ner- vous disorders or blindness, they may try to stay with penmates. Gaunt cattle are also abnormal. Get cattle up. It is quite normal for them to rise, stretch and defecate. Check manure droppings. Watch for undue nasal discharge. They are clues to respiratory problems. LISTEN: for sniffling, coughing, groaning and grunting. Lameness can be identified by listening to gait. Once suspected, mark the animals so they can be identified for treatment. Record treatment, date, an- tibiotic or vaccine and dosage given.
