By ROSS HAUGH.
The World Series is history for another year.
Despite the great celebrations andenthusiasm coming
out of Philadelphia the 1980 Fall Classic was far from
that as far as the calibre of play was concerned.
Nobody can take away from the Phillies their
great determination and ability to fight back time
after time when it appeared they were destined for
defeat.
The selection of Mike Schmidt as the most
valuable player in the World Series could certainly be
up for discussion. Fellows like Larry Bowa, Pete Rose
and Tug McGraw contributed just as much as Schmidt
did.
Our nomination for the top award would be
Phillies catcher Bob Boone. He did a great job of
handling the pitchers and was especially sharp in
stopping and blocking pitches in the dirt.
The key play in the sixth and final game in our opi-
nion came when Pete Rose displayed the hustle he has
shown throughout his entire career.
Rose was right beside Bob Boone near the stands
when the Phillies catcher dropped a pop foul and Rose
grabbed it before it hit the ground.
The Rose catch made the second out with a couple
of Royals on base and squelched a promising rally.

JUST WIDE — This Goderich shot on goal just missed by inches in Sunday's home opener
for the Exeter atoms, Sunday. However, Goderich still had eight shots that didn't go wide as
they posted an 8-2 win over the locals. Netminder Fred Gregus is down cutting the angle on
the shot while other Exeter players are Captain Jon O'Connor, Robbie McLean (15) and Jeff

Off to a good start
Three graduates from the Exeter minor hockey
system are turning a good preformances in university
ranks.
Paul and Perry Pooley are at Ohio State Universi-
ty in Columbus, Ohio and Dave Bogart is a member of
the Wilfrid Laurier team out of Waterloo.
We received a media book this week from Ohio
State University and the Pooley's were listed on the
roster of 27 players. Of that number 10 others are
players from the province of Ontario.
We have asked the OSU sports department for a
regular report on the outcome of their games and the
Exeter boys in particular.
A London Free Press report a week ago said Paul
and Perry each scored a goal in their first two games
at Ohio Satate.
The Pooley twins have two years experience in the
OHA Junior 'A' while Dave Bogart was with the
Strathroy Blades, junior 'B' club last year.
The three Exeter youngsters will meet head on
this weekend when Wilfrid Laurier University travel
to Ohio State for a Friday and Saturday doubleheader.
Bogart is one of four regular defencemen on the
Wilfrid Laurier team. The team took part this
weekend in the annual Guelph-McMaster face-off tour-
nament.
Laurier defeated the University of Guelph 4-3 Fri-
ctay and lost Saturday to McMaster 7-4.
The Laurier team has five players that played in
OHA Junior 'A' ranks last year.
Football Thursday
Semi-final playoffs in the Huron-Perth Football.
Conference get underway tomorrow afternoon, Thurs-
day.
Both South Huron teams will have home field ad-
vantage for the sudden-death games.
The seniors who went through the season un-
defeated will meet Stratford Northwestern at 2:45
p.m.
The local junior team with only one loss and that
was to Goderich will start off the doubleheader at 1
p.m.
Field hockey champs
Congratulations to coach Jim Workman and the
South Huron District High School girls field hockey
team.
The local girls won the Huron-Perth championship
recently and Saturday finished second in WOSSA com-
petition.
They are off to Toronto this weekend to participate
in the all-Ontario championships. Best of luck, girls.
These Leafs are flying
At the time of year when most leaves are falling to
the ground, the Toronto hockey variety, The Maple
Leafs are flying high.
Pal Hal Ballard has his team off to its best start
since the mid-1940's. They won six of their first seven
games before losing Saturday night to Los Angeles.
There still seems to be some agitation between
Ballard and his general manager Punch Imlach but he
has harmony among the players.
The two big moves by Ballard were making peace
with Darryl Sittler and returning him as team captain
and signing Borje Salming to a long term contract.
While the Leafs are in first place in the overall
standings, Ballard is trying to make more deals to im-
prove the club further.
On CFPL radio Monday night, Ballard said he ex-
pected to sign free agent Blaine Stoughton in the next
two weeks.
When asked about further deals, the Leaf owner
said, "I'm working on two other 'hot numbers' and
they could be on our side in the very near future."
We would guess that one of the two 'hot numbers'
would be a goal tender. This is the only spot where
they are a little suspect.
With 30 year-old rookie Jiri Crka in goal, the
Toronto club in their first season games gave up 27
goals, six more than at the same time last year.
Professional Mounts

including two more with a
man advantage, and then
coasted to their triumph.
Exeter's second goal came

Exeter enjoyed a slight
margin in shots on goal with

visitors against Steve Wells.'
The local Hawks also won
the penalty race with 17 to
the 15 served by Mitchell.
