The annual Christmas hunt for the perfect gifts. for the. ,important people in our lives is about to. begin. No sooner have we washed- the Thanksgiving dishes, than we are reminded of more work ahead, Christ- mas is just around the cor- ner, according to the ads. And, if we want everything to be perfect, we'd. better start shopping NOW, What used to be a peaceful spiritual celebration has tamed into a frenzy of buy- ing, selling and advertising. In the midst of it all .is the poor shopper, broke and bewildered: Shopping for Christmas has almost becone a year- round job. if we stock up at January sales, we can save some meney, but we can't avoid the last minute panic. You say you, bought a beautiful blue cashmere sweater for your sister last January. You just know she'll love it! You hid it where she'd never find it, You stroked her name off this year's list - one problem. solved. Last week site walked in wearing a beautiful new blue cashmere sweater, Gifts used to be inexpen- sive. Homemade presents were popular. Price tags weren't important; it was the thought that counted. Nowadays some people have to take out loans just to finance their shopping lists, Gifts have become more elaborate - a stereo for junior; a tv for sis; a Florida vacation for Mom and Dad. Toys and games are becoming sophisticated. Take Barbie, for instance, She just turned twenty-one, and she's no ordinary doll. She has a set of clothes to suit every pastime from playing tennis to going to a dance. She has her own car. She even has her own com- mode, and it flushes. Stuffed animals have sur- passed the small cute and cuddly stage, How about a six-foot tall pink rabbit? Or a lamb that says"I'm bashful" when you hug it? Or a brown bear that speaks German when you press on its tummy? A small robot laughs hysterically when you hit it on the head. The hard part is making it stop. Board games cover almost every aspect of life. At one time, toy guns were frowned upon because of their violent nature, Now war games are a popular pastime. Computor games - the current craze - are evidence of today's sophistication. In spite of the variety of gifts on the market, most of us encounter the what-can-I- buy-for-someone -who -has- everything syndrome. One answer is a pair of glasses with battery-operated wipers for those wet and ,snowy days. The hunt goes on for the perfect gift for someone By DARLENE McBRIDE The third meeting of Hurondale Cooking Kooks was held October 6, at the Pentecostal Church. The leaders told about the pressure cooker and the safety necessary. Brenda MacDonald and Kelly Jones made up "Chicken Cacciatore". After this came the 4-H pledge and roll call. The secretary special. Each year it becomes more difficult to find and more difficult to finance. By the time Christ- mas arrives, the shopper is not only broke and bewildered but exhausted as well. If only we could remember, it isn't the price tag that says we care. Seven members of the IlUronclale VI 4-II homemak- ing club, "The Country Cookers" gathered at the home of Wendy Kerslake Oc- tober 6 for the fourth meeting. The group, discussed how fun and easy it is to make crepes. Crepe batter is thinner than pancake batter and similar to the thickness of whipped cream. It con- tains, more eggs and less flour than pancake batter. The crepe recipe we created at the meeting was "Spicy Apple Crepes". Bach .girl participated by cooking a crepe and filling it to eat, They were delicious, The old fashioned apple pie flavour of these scrumptious crepes makes them a natural with a chunk of cheddar cheese or a dollop of yogurt or sour cream. For another delicious crepe dessert, crepe stacks are an idea. Stack five crepes using a filling of chocolate pudding or whipped cream flavoured with chocolate syrup. Cut into pieces, serve and enjoy! Taking part in the crepe preparations were Margi Chaffe, Chris Coates, Donna Prout, Dianne, Marry Lou and Sharon Rundle and Marlene Winters. The fifth meeting of the "Country Cookers" was held October 20 at Barb Passmore's 'home. The meeting opened with the 4-H pledge, We considered the. pros, cons and uses. of microwave ovens.
