So you feel that you are not included in any of the above? How about joining the weight watchers, the Opti-Mrs, the Optimists, the Wednesday night ladies bowling or the Wednesday night shuf- fleboard tournaments. There could also be a place for you in the organizing of the annual Santa Claus parade or as a coach or assistant, as scorekeeper, equipment manager, booth worker, driver, or possibly you could organize some kind of ac- tivity in your own neigh- borhood. Get active and keep active. It's a long winter ahead so don't waste it. At the Club we are looking at the prospect of putting on some weekend dances with the possibility of having live bands brought in to entertain you. These dances will be open to the public, Response by you will determine the number and type of functions we will bee elele to hold. On the 25th of thiS month there will be a meeting held, at the club for the purpote of installing new officers and inducting new numbers. There will be a dinner and cocktails for members and their guests followed by a dance at 9 p.m. open to the public. If you have not already purchased your Halloween candies from a member of the Optimists, you can still be so by contacting Duff Rothbauer at 228-6398. The candies come in a large bag (containing 50 individually wrapped bags) of assorted the animal's skin and kill the grubs before they cause extensive damage., Treat- ment time can be a problem. Cattle should be treated prior to December 1st. If feeder calves and yearlings are Under severe stress on arrival, wait until they are types. Along with the candies you receive two reflector carrying bags for the kid- dies. The club will be holding an oratorical contest, in con- junction with the" schools in Stephen Township again this year. The winners will have the opportunity to compete with other boys and girls in Ontario for a $600,00 prize. We have some excellent speakers in our area and I'm sure. that they will give the city kids a run for top honors. For the past 11 years or more Santa Claus has paid our community a visit, bringing candies and his jolly old self to all the little kids, Last year be evenfound time to tour the village of Centralia where he was warmly received by not only the juniors but the seniors as well. The.planning for this year's parade has just gotten under way. It's possible that the big fat man with the long white beard might find room in his busy schedule to ride down the streets of Crediton as well as our other com- munities. More to come on this as the day approaches. On December 7, at 1 p.m. at the annex there will be a meeting for all parents to discuss the possibility of again running a teen town for our kids, If you are in- terested in helping your teenagers improve their life style, you will attend. On November 7 at the Arena there is going to be a skite-a than to• raise money for the winter free skating program. Last year the club paid out over $1200.00 for free skating, but with the numerous projects being run this year we feel that we cannot solely fund this program. Your help will be appreciated. Ron Morrison is organizing a committee to look at the possibility of running a road rally for the teen drivers in the area. Here is a chance for our young drivers to test there driving skills and to follow the rules of the road. We hope that some of them will learn that there is more to driving than just spinning wheels and racing around the streets. If anyone of you is in- terested in playing bad- minton, Tony Jones is in the process or organizing a night a week. More to come on this at a later date. The next regular meeting of the Optimist Club will be held on November '2 at 10 a.m. at the Annex. Make Fido a bag of cedar shavings for a bed. He'll like the comfort and the odor will repel fleas. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture and the . com- mission have been working on it for several months. The OFA'S main concern is the growing concentration in our food industry, Two chains .already control nearly half of the retail food industry in Ontario, The Conernission recommended no further inquiries into. the food industry, Gerry Fortune first vice- president of the Huron County Federation of Agriculture, sees this as an invitation for the chains to grow even larger. This, she says, leads to a monopoly and could control November Seth contact your local veterinarian. Systemic insecticides are available. at farm and feed supply centres. Fellow manufacturers,' directions carefully. ;Use Prices. The farmer would only be offered one price and the consigner would only be offered one price, Two or three groups would control the selling price. And if the fatmers are not offered a fair price, they will discontinue producing the product, which leads to imports and higher prices. The larger food chain stores can demand discounts on bulk; which the smaller stores cannot get. This helps the chain get bigger and the small stores get smaller. Ms. Fortune explains, "We have gone through the exercise of appealling to the government and have achieved very little by it. Paquette, Associate Agricultural Representative Cold Weather Concreting Fresh concrete and cold weather don't mix. Although most building projects are well underway for, this year, some will likely begin in the coming weeks, This will likely mean pouring con- crete during periods of cold weather. Concrete may be safely poured" throughout the winter as long as certain precautions are taken. Most of the damage done...will be during plading and early curing. Concrete that is allowed to freeze soon after placing gains very little strength and .some per- manent damage is likely to occur.- Even if .the concrete is thawed out immediately and cured at higher tem- peratures, the concrete likely won't be as resistant to weathering. Also it won't be as watertight as concrete that has not been frozen. The concrete should have at least 7 days to cure when the rninhintro air temperature in contact with the concrete is 10 degrees celcius. You should not pour concrete on frozen ground. The ground may not settle evenly when it thaws. This can cause cracks. Also. heat is lost from the concrete, slowing down its rate of hardening. There is no such thing as an an anti-freeze for con- Crete, so don't depend en Chemicals to prevent freezing.High early strength concrete can be used as well as chemical accelerators such as Calcium chloride to speed up the setting of concrete, If proper care is taken the concrete will 'achieve its Potential strength no matter what time of year it is poured.
