Seniors win,juniors lose in 11 -11 football
after Bedard's score as Ken
Bergman registered on a
pass from Luke Gagnon.
In the last half of the third
period, Mike Anstett scored
with passing help from Ron
Moore and Tom Ryan while
Ken Bergman scored on as
assist from Mike Anstett.
John Hayter was in goal
for the Mohawks and held
the Buckeyes to a single
goal.
Each team picked up 13
penalties, all of the minor
variety.
The way preliminary plans are shaping up the 1981
Exeter Sportsmen's dinner will be the same as the
other seven, that's "bigger and better than ever."
In a recent conversation with dinner chairman
Frank Giffin we learned of some of the probable
Speakers for the very ,popular event.
This Will be the eighth annual Sportsmen's dinner
sponsored by the Exeter Lions club and each, one to
date has outdone the previous one not only in quality of
speakers, but, also in attendance.
It is expected that popular and controversial
baseball announcer Joe Garagiola will be the headline
Speaker at the London dinner on February 2.
Giffin is not sure if Garagiola will stay for the next
night here. If not, chances are former Big Four foot-
ball star Jake Dunlop would.take over the to speaking
spot,
A couple of area harness horse owners are making
attempts to get Clint Galbraith to attend the dinner
here. Galbraith is the driver of the fastest harness
horse of all time.
Niatross with Galbraith in the sulky recently set a
world mark by completing a one mile dash in just over
one minute and 49 seconds,
Niatross has won 30 of 32 lifetime starts and has
career earnings of $1,825,556. Not bad for a three year
old.
The master of ceremonies has already been
selected. lie will be Canada's national basketball
coach Jack Donahue.
Donahue was' one of the guest speakers a couple of
years ago and we know he will do a very creditable job
in introducing the various speakers and keep the agen-
da moving quickly and smoothly.
The Lions club over the past seven years has done
a tremendous job in raising thousands of dollars to aid
the great cause of crippled children.
Titles possible
Huron-Perth Conference football championships
for the two teams at South Huron District High. School
are distinct possibilities.
The toughest opposition for the local teams in re-
cent years has come from the Goderich Vikings.
The Panthers turned in excellent performances
against Goderich, Thursday and should be heard from
in the upcoming playoffs.
The SH seniors defeated Goderich' 7-3 while the
juniors lost 6-0 despite having a wide edge in
territorial play in the first half.
Two South Huron single points in the first half
were nullified by no yard penalties due to a little over
anxiousness in getting to the ball carrier in the end
zone.
The Panthers meet Stratford Central tomorrow,
Thursday in a doubleheader in the Festival city.
If any playoff positions are not settled by
Thursday's HP games, the necessary extra contests
will be played Monday afternoon.
Good hockey ahead
The first couple of hockey games played at the
South Huron Rec Centre would indicate an exciting
season for the local fans.
Despite Friday's loss to the Lucan Irish, the Ex-
eter junior Hawks will be presenting one of the fastest
skating clubs seen here for many seasons.
On the intermediate scene, the Exeter Mohawks
are off to a good start. On home ice Thursday night,
the Mohawks scored a decisive 5-1 victory over last
year's champion Zurich Buckeyes.
The other area teams, the Centralia Marauders,
Centralia College Saints and the Hensall Sherwoods
will also be dishing up an excellent brand of hockey for
their fans.
Good running
The cross country teams at South Huron District
High School continue to do very well in various meets.
The South Huron junior girls won their division
championship last week in the Huron-Perth
Conference meet held at the tough Byron course Which
includes a ski hill.
Trade time
Each year the World Series provides plenty of
opportunity for rumours of impending trades.
The Toronto Blue Jays should certainly be in-
volved in winter trading. For trade bait, the, Jays have
several players which are attractive to other clubs.
The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are
apparently interested in utility player Bob Bailor.
The Yankees feel that their batting instructor
Charlie Lau can do for Bailor what he did for another
ex-Blue Jay Rick Cerone.
Lau known as the doctor able to prescribe theright
medicine for his batters was able to up Cerone's
average 50 points above his mark as a Blue Jay.
Perfect converts
The after touchdown kickers in the Canadian
Football League are continuing their specialty ar-
tistry.
Through Sunday's CFL games all extra point
attempts have been good and the regular season is
almost over.
Other reports have the Pittsburgh Pirates in-
terested in outfielder Barry Bonnell of the Jays and
Houston Astros thinking of a deal for shortstop Alfredo
Griffin.
MINOR BOWLING
throogh the air.
Panther quarterback Dave'
Bell was geed on eight of 14
pass attempts for 143 yards
while only one Goderich pass
try was successful. It went
for 30 yards.
Doug Hoffman was on the
receiving end of five of Bell's
tosses through the air for a
total of 99 yards, The longest
went to 38 yards,
Pete Tuckey grabbed two
passes for 27 yards and
Dough Fischer hauled in one
Bell aerial fora 17 yard. gain.
On the ground, Rick
Lindenfield led the Panthers
with 84 yards on 18 carries.
Norm Regier was good for 24
yards on six attempts at the
line and Doug Fischer picked
up 15 yards on one carry,
. Greg Prout led the South
Huron defensive corps with
13 key tackles. Next with
seven big stops apiece were
Doug Hoffman, Dale Ker-

and Dave Hughes made
three key stops each.
Fumble helps
The turning point for the
Panthers in the senior game
came in the third quarter
when Doug Hoffman
recovered a Goderich
fumble on a South Huron
kick. Hoffman grabbed the
loose ball on the Goderich
two yard line and took it in
for a touchdown,
Up to that point, Goderich
held a 3-1 lead, The three
points for the visitors came
in the second period while
Greg Prout booted a single
point for South Huron in the
opening quarter.
On the only South Huron
touchdown, Doug Hoffman's
convert attempt for an extra
point hit the upright and
bounced away,
The Panthers held a slight
edge in total offence
statistics. they gained 302
yards to 224 for Goderich.
Goderich were ahead in
yards gained on the ground
by 149 to 144, but, the Pan-
thers held a wide" edge
