Lice vaccine
A vaccine to protect
livestock from lice and other
biting insects may be
practical in the future as a
result of research by
Agriculture Canada
scientists.
"Cattle and sheep build up
a resistance to parasites
such as keds and lice,"
explains W.A. Nelson, a
parasitologist at Agriculture
Canada's research station in
Lethbridge, Alta.
This resistance results
from a reaction in the host
animal's skin that reduces
the availability of blood, thus
depriving the biting insects
of their food.
"Unfortunately, the
resistance partially
disappears over the winter
so animals must rebuild
'their resistance every
spring," Dr. Nelson says.
Dr. Nelson and his
colleagues set out to study
how this resistance was
built.
"We first looked at the
host's immune system," Dr.
Nelson says.
Sixteeniked4infested lambs
were studied over a two-year
period. The number of 'keds'
on the animals and the level
of antibodies in the lambs'
blood were recorded at two-
week intervals.
"The results suggested
that the keds were not af -
fected-'by the lamb's.. an-
tibodies., So. we began to look
elsewhere for the answer,"
Dr. Nelson says.
Dr. Nelson and Dr. R.W.
Baron, another
parasitologist at the
research station, now
believe that the answer may
be only skin deep.
"We are currently,
studying the cells within the
skin of cattle and sheep,
trying to find antibodies and
other chemicals that 'might
be involved in building the
resistance to biting insects.
"A lot more research is
needed before we fully un-
derstand how cattle and
sheep build up their
resistance. But, we are
getting closer, and research
could soon enable us to
develop a vaccine to help
farmers fight lice and keds
in the future," Dr. Nelson
says..
