By ROSS. HAUGH
The high hopes of many Canadians of participation
by a team from our country in the World Series were
grounded rather quickly over the weekend.
The Montreal Expos were knocked out. Maybe one
Could say they were eliminated by one "Tug" too.
Many. The awesome relief pitching of Tug McGraw of
the Phillies was one of the big reasons the Expos are
now on the outside for the annual fall playoffs and
World Series. •
While members of the Expos team head for their
respective homes for the off season or some to winter
ball, the office staff will be busy for some time.
They will be involved in refunding millions of
dollars for tickets to the NL playoffs and World Series
which just did not happen. That sounds like a lot of
money and it really is,
Our son Dan had a package of two tickets for each
of the two playoff games and four World Series con-
tests at a cost of 5267. Multiply that by 25,000 and you
get a staggering figure in excess of six million bucks.
With all the publicity on the upcoming. World
Series another sport gets off the ground this week.
The 21 teams in the National Hockey League start
a schedule of 840 games to eliminate only five teams
by the time playoffs come around early in April.
The home season for the Toronto Maple Leafs
starts Saturday night when they play host to the New
York Rangers,
The Leafs who dealt off a goodly number of very
popular players during last season seem to be a little
more settled this year especially since Darryl Sittler
and Harold Ballard have apparently buried the
hatchet.
One interesting sidelight will be the various visits
to Maple Leaf Gardens, especially the first time for
those ex-Leafs.
The first visit by former Leafs will be November 1
when the Colorado Rockies will be supplying the op-
position which will include Lanny McDonald, Walt
McKechnie and Joel Queeneville.
On November 29, the Washington Capitals and
goalie Mike Palmateer and defenceman Pat Ribble
will make their first official league start in Toronto.
The Capitals were at the Gardens Saturday night
for an exhibition game and Palmateer allowed only
one Leaf shot to get past him.
If Palmateer's performance is any indication all
of the former Leafs will be giving a little bit extra
when they make their first jaunt back to the Gardens,
Palmateer was great in stopping all but one Toron-
to shot and apparently kept an occasional eye on
Harold Ballard's seat to see his reaction. Palmateer
says Ballard left with eight minutes left in the game,
Penalty confusion
Some of the new rules dreamt up by National
Hockey league governors during the off-season are
causing confusion not only for the coaches and players,
but, also for the referees.
Most of the problems come from the new regula-
tion which calls for players not involved in a fight on
the ice to go to neutral areas designated by the
referee.
So far it seems that referees and players are not
sure where the neutral areas were and what kind of
fisticuff fell under this rule.
If two players begin fighting, the referee will
order the rest of the players near the altercation to
move to two separate areas. If they don't one team or
both can be given a two minute bench penalty. Every
player who fails to heed the referee and move away is
assessed a 10 minute misconduct penalty.
Furthermore, if a player who doesn't leave the
scene of the fight drops his gloves and stick will get
• another 10 minute misconduct.
If a second fight breaks in the same area, the
referee can give a game misconduct to the instigator.
After two game misconducts are meted out to one
player during the season he is suspended for one extra
game.
Three game misconducts bring a two game
suspension and from then on each additional game
misconduct adds another game to the suspension,
Colour added
The CBC has added a new commentator to their
hockey television crews for this winter that should add
a good amount of colour.
Joining the western Canada network will be
former Boston and Colorado coach Don Cherry. He is
well known for his enthusiasm and loquaciousness on
any subject and hockey in particular.
Another addition this year will be Mickey Red-
mond who will join the Montreal and Toronto
telecasts. Redmond for many years was a high scorer
with the Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings.
Other colour analysts returning to the telecasts
are Howie Meeker, Gerry Pinder and Gary
Dornhoefer.
In addition to the regular Saturday night CRC
telecasts CHCH in Hamilton will be carrying 34 mid-
week and Sunday games.

Centennials
get 1-0 win
Wes Abbott and Mike
Janyu combined for a goal in
Arkona Sunday, to get
Exeter Centennials a 1-0 win
over Taxandria Falcons in
an Ausable district soccer
semi-final.
The final games in the
round-robin set will have
Exeter at home at Canner's
field against Grand Bend B
next Sunday at 2 p.m.
Elsewhere, Grand Bend
Colonials will host Taxan-
dria at the same time in
Grand Bend. The outcome of
both games will determine a
finalist for October 19 on
neutral grounds.
In Sunday's match, Exeter
and Taxandria went
scoreless until the second
half. Then, Abbott scored for
the Centennials at 70 minutes
by hitting in a rebound from
a shot on goal by Janyu.
Both teams had multiple
chances earlier, and later,
but each were balked by
good defences and
goalkeeping. The game,
played in rain, and on a
soaked pitch, was clean, fast
and hard throughout.
Rich Helm, in goal for
Exeter, deserved his shut-
out behind front players who
also shaped themselves an
excellent game. David
Holmes, a consistently
strong and effective
fullback, was another stan-
out in an all-around fine
Centennial effort.
