Mary's '
musings
BY MARY ALDERSON
Remember last spring
when Johnny Carson came
out during the Oscar
presentations and asked the
audience which of the two
wall paper samples they
liked best? His wife was re-
decorating and just couldn't
make up her mind, so the
audience did it for her.
At the time, I laughed. Big
joke, eh? Women just can't
make up their minds when it
comes to choosing between
101 colours.
Little did I know then that
it wasn't funny at all.
Picking a colour scheme is
not easy, I'll bet youthought
that having a sofa
reupholstered was a simple
matter.
Instead of staring at end-
less piles of wall paper
samples, as Johnny Carson's
wife must have done, I have
been wandering around for
the past few weeks with
fabric swatches in my hot
little hands.
I have looked at the
samples up against the wall,
and against the curtains. I
have looked at them in
daylight, and after dark with
the lamps turned on. I have
looked at them in candle
light,
The first night I came
home from the various
upholsterers, I was armed
with a mountain of fabric
samples. My husband
quickly vetoed flowered
prints and the mountain was
automatically cut in half.
We had to decide between
rustic and elegant. We were
forced to choose from
velours, fuzzy stuff, and
wooley stuff.
There were stripes and
plaids and funny looking
prints. There were those that
had been treated to resist
Spills, and those that looked
far more durable. There
were earthytones,and bright,
vibrant colours. The pros and
cons were endless.
I actually found myself
having night mares about
fabric samples. I woke up in
a cold sweat, dreaming that
the couch came back with
one half of the sectional in a
stripe while the oth& half
was plain.
Johnny Carson's wife
didn't know how lucky she
was.
Finally I made up my
mind. It would be the tex-
tured beige stripe with the
rust tinges. Now that was
settled I could relax.
But no! Once you've
decided to re-upholster the
sofa, the whole thing
snowballs, Before you know
it, redecorating gets totally
out of control.
I suddenly realized that
the yellow and green pillows
that went so well before, will
look just terrible with the
new beige and rust. We
added new throw cushions to
the upholsterer's order.
The old chair would have
to go, since it would look so
shabby beside the new-look
sofa. Perhaps a brown
recliner would look good.
The lampshade which I
had covered myself in green
an gold wool to match the old
sofa would have to be
changed. I'll have to get one
of those kits and re-do the
shade for the new look.
Even the gold ribbon on
the dried flower bouquet will
have to be replaced with a
rust coloured bow.
And the bird cage. We can't
have that ugly chrome thing
Standing in our totally re-
done living room. So I've
ordered a new bamboo style
cage to replace the old one. I
just hope Hamlet (our
budgie, who's not nearly as
eloquent as his namesake) is
prepared to have his home
redecorated, too.
