the commencement of the
"14th Annual Student Writing
Contest. The contest, which
is now part of the English
curriculum at • many
Canadian high schools, is
open to students of grade 9
and up. The assignment is to
write, either English or
French, up to 2,000 words
(which is about 10
typewritten, double-spaced
pages), on any subject.
Mr. Sinclair explains that
the entry can be fiction, non-

School bus accidents
within the County are
relatively rare. Board policy
regarding operation of the
vehicles during inclement
weather is straightforward
and plain. The driver and

More than 650 Ontario
Tamers hired an agricrew
this season, making this the
third successful year of the
summer youth employment
program.
The agricrew program
operated for eight weeks,
from June 23 to August 15.
Fifty 4-member crews and
the necessary support staff
created jobs for 300 Ontario
students, aged 15 to 21. The
crews were available to
farmers for up to five con-
secutive days for $90 per
day.
"The farmers were really
pleased with the agricrews'
work this stimmer,"says
Henry Reinders, program
supervisor. "They ap-

The contest, which usually
draws around 2,000 entries
each year, is organized in
co-operation with the
Canadian CoUncil of
Teachers of English and also
the Ontario Council of
Teachers of English.
Representatives of both
councils act on the judging
panel.
"We don't expect the
writing to be at the
professional level", said Mr.
Sinclair, "but most of the
winners in the past have all
shown that they care about
words and they certainly
preciated being able to hire
a supervised crew which
could work on its own
because it freed the farmer
to do other work,"
The agricrew program,
sponsored by the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food, is unique in Ontario.
The students work for an
eight-hour day doing a wide
range of farm labor in-
cluding haying, painting, and
building fences.
"The students enjoyed the
program, and some are look-
ing forward to a second
summer," says Mr.
Reinders. "They liked work-
