Trust company search begins for writers The Middlesex County Board of Education transports 19,90.0 pupils from home to school and back in- volving a daily total of 15,000 miles by school buses. vans,, station wagons and cars. Some vehicles are equipped to handle pupils confined to wheelchairs- ahcl provision made for other pupils with ' physical disabilities. In all, a total of 191 vehicles are utilized for the purpose of transporting children to schools within the County. The vehicles, with the exception of eight school buses are owned by seven companies under con- tract to the Board. School bus accidents within the County are relatively rare. Board policy regarding operation of the vehicles during inclement weather is straightforward and plain. The driver and only the driver determines whether he or she should take a vehicle out on the, road during the bad weather. , When fog drifts in and is en- countered by a driver he or she pulls the vehicle to the side and waits' until the fog clears and it is safe to 'con- tinue. Radio communication with the vehicles of' each company is monitored dur- ing the period the vehicles are picking up or delivering. pupils home. The vast majority of other vehicle drivers are well ' aware of the purpose of the school bus flashing lights and are alert to children crossing the road at that time. School vehicles are in- spected at least twice each year for road worthiness, by Ministry of Transportation qualified personnel. In addi- tion qualified mechanics must inspect the vehicles twice each year and certify their fitness for operation. School buses are built to rigid federal and provincial government specifications and must be provided with all the necessary first. aid and fire fighting equipment Students traimi'15,000 miles on schpol bus not flashing, the road ahead' is clear and there are no children in the vicinity who could be hurt. Student Writing Contest, Public Relations Department, 320 Bay Street, Toronto, Ontario. The contest, which usually draws around 2,000 entries each year, is organized in co-operation with the Canadian CoUncil of Teachers of English and also the Ontario Council of Teachers of English. Representatives of both councils act on the judging panel. "We don't expect the writing to be at the professional level", said Mr. Sinclair, "but most of the winners in the past have all shown that they care about words and they certainly preciated being able to hire a supervised crew which could work on its own because it freed the farmer to do other work," The agricrew program, sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, is unique in Ontario. The students work for an eight-hour day doing a wide range of farm labor in- cluding haying, painting, and building fences. "The students enjoyed the program, and some are look- ing forward to a second summer," says Mr. Reinders. "They liked work- ing outside and gainig diverse and valuable job ex- periences". have interesting stories to tell. Some very talented writers have come to light through our contest."
