After harvest, you know just where to find your
worst quackgrass infestations. So when you see
them, plan to destroy them, with a fall application of
Roundup® herbicide by Monsanto. Here's how
Roundup fits into your fall schedule.
Delay plowing to let quackgrass regrow. Roundup
works on actively growing quackgrass that's at least
8" high. Plowing just breaks up the weeds.
Roundup destroys treated quackgrass, rhizomes and
all, and stops it from spreading or regrowing. That's
why it pays to delay your fall plowing until the weeds
are ready for Roundup.
Roundup can deliver 95.99% control of quackgrass.
For excellent quackgrass control apply Roundup
before the first weed-killing frost, and give the herbi-
cide five days to work on the weed before plowing.
Follow good agronomic practices.
Roundup stops where the treated weeds stop.
Roundup goes wherever the treated weeds go.
Then it stops. Because Roundup works in the weeds,
not in the soil. Next spring, you can plant any
labeled crop: corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, barley
or potatoes.
Hit quackgrass wherever you see it. Because fall
is the best time to control quackgrass with Roundup.
See your dealer today and ask about the new
trial-size.

As of September corn head
smut has been identified on
12: farms in Perth and Huron
Counties, In all fields, the
disease has only been trace
amounts, It won't affect
yield. We have had
numerous inquiries about
smut but most of these have
turned out to be common
smut.
One farm in the
Shakespeare a' that had
head smut last year has
trace amounts this year but
certainly nothing that will
affect yield. I talked to
Harvey Wright. the• Soils and
Crops Specialist for Oxford
county.,fle checked the area
where smut was a hot bed
last year. Of all the fields he
checked in that area, this
year N()N I of the fields
have smut at an economic
level,
There are research trials
in that area. It appears that
no hybrid is resistant. Some
hybrids are more suscepti-
ble than others. Also, the
disease seems to be worse if
the corn had difficulty in
emerging. This also holds
true in commercial fields.
We can deted head smut
first around the headlands of
the field. Especially areas
that seem to be compacted.
It appears plants emerg-
ing through this stressed
condition are more suscepti-
ble. In the research trials,
there also appears to be one
or two seed treatments that
can greatly reduce the in-
cidence of this disease.
Insects a much bigger
problem in corn
I would estimate that we
will lose more corn due to in-
sects in one township in.
Huron or Perth than the
whole province will lose du,e
to head smut. Our main
problem is corn rootworm.
They are' those beetles
that are feeding on the silks
and tips of the corn cobs
right now. The northern corn
rootworm is a yellowish
green colour. 'The western
corn rootworm is a
yellowish colour with dark
stripes. It appears that this
spring more rootwormS
hatched than last spring.
Also, the adequate
moisture in May and early
June probably diluted the in-
secticides.
The rootworm insecticides
are ‘applied in May and the
eggs don't, hatch until mid
June, This means the insec-
ticide has a 4 to 6 week
period to break down before
it's needed. If you skimped
on the rates, then you had
even less insecticide when it
was needed between mid
June and mid July. As you
harvest this fall, check for
rootworm damage. If there
are a lot of adults or many
cobs without silks, then you
need a control measure.
Another way to check is try
and pull the plant out. If it
pulls out easily,- then
probably those roots have
been pruned by this insect. If
you can't pull ,it out easily,
then there is no problem.
The best control is crop rota-
tion.
Western corn
rootworm explodes
It appears that the levels
of the western corn
rootworm live really in-
creased in Perth-Huron this
rootworm, corn borer and
fall armyworm. Head smut,
this past year has received a
lot of attention and appears
it is not a big problem. The
other two, rootworm and
corn borer. are a problem.
Hybrids, with good stalk
strength, can give you some
protection against rootworm
and borer,
When you are buying
hybrids this year, I. would
suggest you put more
emphasis on stalk strength
than on any rumors about
head smut. (I have heard
some real good rumors
about head. smut. When I
checked into them, the
rumors were wrong. Most of
these rumors are being
spread by corn seed
salesmen,)
Soil & crop
improvement
corn trails.
Both the Huron and Perth
Soil & Crop Improvement
Associations will be sum-
marizing on-farm trials. A
sub committee of Soil &
Crop directors then picked
what they thought were the
best hybrids. They plan to do
this again this. year. If you.
have .a trial on your .farm,.
we would appreciate hearing
about it. We will be mailing
some field sheets to all the
farmers who participated in
this project last year.. We
certainly appreciated your
co-operation last year. On-

while you wait,
year. fast year. we may
have had 1 or 2% Western
adults. This year some fields
have 20 to 30% Western
adults. And most fields have
more total adults than last
year.
The Western corn
rootworm does more feeding
damage to the roots, It also
seems' to be a bit harder to
kill, To make matters
worse, it can breed with the
Northern corn rootworrn.
These facts make control
much more critical.
Corn borer also
causing lodging
This year the European
corn borer is doing more
damage to corn fields than I
have seen in eight years, It
is causing plants to break at
the tassel, above the ear,
below the ear and at ground
level, The•corn borer causes
the plant to break. The corn
rootworm weakens the roots
and causes the plant to tip
over.
The adult of the corn borer
lays its eggs in June. The
larvae start to feed shortly
afterwards. To control
them, you have to spray an
insecticide into the whorl of
the corn plant before the
tassel emerges. The larvae
feed on the leaves for a while
and then enter the stalk.
Once inside the stalk, they
continue to feed until
harvest. This weakens the
stalk and also allows dis-
eases to enter.
This insect over-winters at
the base of the corn stalks in
a dormant stage. They
emerge next June and start
all over again. Burying the
corn stalks is the best way to
get rid of them, However,
every farmer in Ontario
would have to do this to get
rid of all the adults for next
spring. They fly quite a few
miles between where they
overwinter and where they
lay their eggs.
However. any field that
has a lot of corn stalks on the
top of the ground next spring
will be most prone to borer
damage next year.
Also fall armyworm •
This insect is also present
this year. He is feeding on
the leaves and may do some
damage to the ear. General-
ly, the fall armyworm does
not seriously affect grain
yield. Even if he does, it is
too late to spray for them
now.
