The Exeter juveniles
literally tossed away their
chances for the Ontario
championship, Sunday, as
they committed four errors
in the top of the ninth to
allow McGregor to score
twice and pull out a 5-3 win
in the third and deciding
game of their final series at
Dashwood.
Exeter appeared to be
headed for a story-book
finish as they scored two in
the seventh and one in the
eighth to knot the count at 3-
3, but the locals failed to
score in their final plate
appearance in the next in-
ning when they loaded the
bases.
McGregor jumped into a 1-
0 lead in the second inning
when they touched pitcher
Jeff Fuller for two singles
and were aided by a miscue
on a pickoff attempt at se-
cond base.
The visitors • added two
more in the fourth on three
singles, a double and one
base on balls. They were

Earl Weaver, manager of the Baltimore Orioles
has been well known over the years for coming up with
new theories and gimmicks.
During the past, week he has come up with a jim-'
dandy to say the least.
Weaver started his new practice of inserting a
pitcher in his lineup as the designated hitter in Detroit
Wednesday night,
There is nothing wrong with putting a pitcher in
that batting spot, but, we would imagine that player
should at least be in the ball park and ready to play.
Not so Wednesday in Detroit. Weaver threw
pitcher Steve Stone in as the designated hitter in the
sixth spot in the batting order, Stone was already in
Toronto getting ready to pitch the next night.
Thursday night in Toronto, it was the same story
with pitcher Tippy Martinez as the designated batter.
Martinez at the time was out of the country attending a
funeral.
We would certainly go along with Weaver's idea on
listing a pitcher in the designated hitter's spot.
Especially in the fifth or sixth position, if his team
has a rally going by the time that spot is reached he
can pinch hit with a right or left handed batter depen-
ding on which side the opposing pitcher throws from.
That's fine so far, but, we would hope league of-
ficials get their heads together and proclaim that any
player inserted on a manager's official lineup be at
least in the park and available to play.
Still on the subject of major league baseball,
George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees
may have had some madness in his methods when he
suggested that the Toronto Blue Jays may not be put-
ting forth their best efforts while taking on the
Baltimore Orioles who were getting a little closer to
the Yankees.
After Steinbrenner's charges, 'the Blue Jays won
two of three games from the Orioles and in the loss
took Baltimore to 12 innings before fading out.
The Toronto club with Sunday's win in the 13th in-
ning upped their season total to 61, a new mark in their
four year career in big league baseball.
The Blue Jays have six more chances this week to
be spoilers with three games each against the Yankees
and Orioles. They certainly should be in the right mood
to do some damage to the Yankees after the recent
comments from Steinbrenner.
Hawks to practice
The first practice for the Exeter Hawks junior
hockey club will be held this Sunday afternoon at the
Stephen Township arena at Huron Park.
Hawks manager Fred Mommersteeg emphasizes
that players from all surrounding areas of Exeter will
be welcome at Sunday's initial workout.
This would include players from Hensall, Zurich,
Grand Bend. Dashwood, Huron Park, and Centralia as
well as Exeter and all areas in between and around.
The regular Western Junior "D" schedule is ex-
pected to start for the Hawks with a home game on
Friday, October 17.
Mommersteeg told us that most of the Hawks
games for the 1980-81 at home would be on Friday
nights.
After a number of practice sessions, the Hawks
will open the exhibition season in Lucan on October 8.
They will by at home at the South Huron Rec Centre on
October 10 and 12 facing Mitchell and Seaforth, respec-
tively and will go to Mitchell on October 14.
Skating sessions
Frank Funston, manager of the Stephen Township
arena tells us he has classes now on for power skating.
The first session was held Monday night, but,
Funston added that if anyone wanted to join in they
could still do so by showing up at the arena tomorrow
night, Thursday at 7 p.m.
Football surprises
After the first two games of this season for the
Toronto Argonauts we suggested that two wins did not
a season make and the Montreal Alouettes off to a poor
start would still have to be reckoned with.
That has certainly come to pass with Montreal
moving into a first place tie with Ottawa and the Argos
falling into the league basement.
We hope the same type of optimism now appearing
in Detroit for their football Lions does not peter out
like it has for the Toronto footballers.
The Lions who only won two games during the en-
tire 1979 season have already won that many games
and they have only played twice.
A quick look at the NFL standing shows that the
competition will be very keen this year. After two
weeks of play, only seven of the 28 teams remain un-
defeated.
The Silverdome of Pontiac, Michigan should be
packed to capacity when the Lions make their first
home appearance of the regular season this Sunday
afternoon.
We are fortunate in having tickets for the big
game and are looking forward to seeing rookie sensa-
tion Billy Sims in action.
Sims has gained more than 100 yards in each of the
first two games and has everybody in Detroit excited
about his play and the enthusiasm it has created in the
entire ball club.
BIG ONE — Brian Rader was the hitting star for the Exeter
juveniles in their game against McGregor, Sunday. He un-
corked a two-run homer over the left field fence against a
strong wind. Coach Bruce Shaw was among those out to
welcome Rader as he crossed home plate. Staff photo
PERFECT PEG — McGregor s Scott Boussie (7) was out at se-
cond on this play as he attempted to stretch a single to a dou-
ble. Left fielder Kevin Easterbrook made a perfect peg to se-
cond baseman Dave Atthill for the out. Pitcher Jeff Fuller (30)
and first baseman Dave Bogart (19) back up in the play.
