Lucan, Ilderton take titles
in area soccer tournament
Teams from Lucan and
Ilderton won divisional
soccer champinships in an
atom tournament in Exeter,
KIPPEN SHOOT
Jack Mills, Bert Mahaffey
and Jack Bell recorded
scores of 25 each to lead the
16 shooters at Tuesday's
weekly competition at the
Kippen gun club.
Close behind with 24's
were Calvin Christie, John
Anderson, Bill Stewart, Roy
Lamport and Murray
Christie.
Next came John Hessels
23, Mery Batkin and Bill
Simmons 22, Al Kyle and
Bryan Beer 21, John Grien-
danus 17, Dan Crerar 15 and
Terry Mann,
Saturday, with local teams
acquiring two second-place
finishes and one third.
Exeter Whitecaps,
sparked by Henry DeBruyn
with a hat-trick placed
second in A-division finals
with a 4-0 win over Nairn.
Lucan, the divisional
champions, had earlier
beaten the Whitecaps 3-1,
and Nairn 6-1.
Ilderton won the B-division
title on a margin of goals, by
defeating Exeter Sting 4-1,
and drawing 1-1 with Exeter
Drillers. In the opening
match of B-division play, the
Drillers and Sting were level
in a scoreless tie, putting
them second and third
respectively in the finals.
Exeter pee wees dropped
the first game of the best of
five series with Wingham 18-
7 on the home diamond
Thursday night then came
LAWN BOWLING
Competition was close
during the two jitneys at the
Exeter lawn bowling ,club
this week. Beth Batten, Edith
Love and Tom Walker were
tied for first place in
Tuesday's competition with
identical scores for two wins
and aggregates of 22.
Deadlocked for fourth
place with two victories and
an aggregate of 21 were
Clarence Down and Lorna
Spencer. Next came Charles
Hendy and Stella Taylor.
Saturday night, Clarence
Down captured top honours
with an aggregate of 30 to go
with a pair of wins.
Garnet Hicks was in the
runner up spot with an
aggregate of while Lawrence
Russell scored 23, Alvin Pym
and Gertrude Hamilton 22
and Edith Love and Velma
Huff 21.

sday night as they collected
nine hits and 11 walks off
three Exeter pitchers.
Exeter came up with six
scattered hits. Sean
Whiteford had a home run
and a single to bring in three
runs. Marty Taylor hit a
double and a single. Scott
Bogart came up with two
singles.
Exeter 6 Wingham 5
Sean Whiteford opened the
scoring in the top of the
second when he hit a triple
and scored on an error.
Wingham took a 3-1 lead in
the bottom of the second.
Exeter came back in the
third as Rick Gillfilan
walked, Marty Taylor single
and Whiteford drove both
runs in with a double.
Whiteford scored on George
Pratt's ground out to take a
4-3 lead.
Exeter added two more in
the fourth on singles by Scott
Lovie and Dave Russell.
Wingham retired in order
in the third fourth and fifth
innings and pulled in one run
in the sixth and one in the
seventh.
Exeter was held scoreless
in the fifth, sixth and seventh
leaving two men on base.
Each team recorded only
one error each.
Scat Lovie was the win-
ning pitcher going the
distance. He struck out six
batters and gave tip five bits
and four walks.

The tournament, featuring
nine games for six teams,
began with a knock-out
round for positions in the
• divisional title matches.
In that round, Nairn
blanked Exeter Drillers 3-0;
Lucan defeated Exeter Sting
Carpetba
The Carpetbaggers took
the B championship of the
Exeter and area mens' rec
fastball league Monday with
a 4-1 win over McKnights.
The white and black
uniformed team swept the
series two games straight as
they won 8-5 in the first game
of the series played Wed-
nesday.
The Crescent Rolls are one
game up in their best of five
A final against Hensall as
they picked up a 7-4 victory
Monday.
Kirkton girls
beat Byron
The Kirkton midget girls
fastball team won the second
game in their current round
robin series. They defeated
Byron 6-1 and now take on
Mt: Brydges in a home and
home series in the final leg
or round-robin play for the
Tri-County league cham-
pionship.
In the victory over Byron,
Brenda Iredale went the
pitching distance striking
out 12 opposition batters. She
allowed only one hit while
giving up four walks.
Jane Simpson led the eight
hit Kirkton attack with a
triple and single. Close
behind with two singles
apiece were Patti Willis and
Jane Sims while Brenda
Iredale tripled in the third to
score Jane Simpson for the
first run and Corinne
Weernink doubled in a pinch
hitting role.
9-1; and Exeter Whitecaps
shut-out Ilderton 2-0. The
Whitecaps, who performed
well throughout the day, then
fell 3-1 to the eventual A-
champions from Lucan;
before defeating Nairn 4-0 as
the A-division runners-up,

7 in Exeter.

winners of the A final are
schedled to playa one game
series for the playoff
championship of the league.
Cowgirls lead
final series
night at 9 p.m. with the third
contest back in Crediton
Monday evening at 8:30 p,m,
Crediton reached the final
round with a Thursday 6-3
victory over Ailsa Craig in
the deciding game of a best-
of-three set while Parkhill
eliminated Lucan in straight
games.
In Monday's final opener
Crediton scored 14 runs in
the first inning as the
Parkhill girls helped the
cause with 15 errors.
In the Crediton first, San-
dy O'Neill contributed a
home run and single.
Deb Lord was the top
hitter during the game with
a home run and three
doubles. Getting three hits
apiece were Merna Scott and
Michelle Vandergunst while
Sherry Pfaff. Carol Stuart,
Shelley Weber, Wilma
Lagerwerf and Fay Hayter
picked up two hits apiece.
Deb Lord was the winning
pitcher for Crediton. Six of
the nine Parkhill runs came
in the top of the seventh in-
ning.
In Thursday's 6-3 Crediton
win over Ailsa Craig, Deb
Lord and Merna Scott
shared pitching duties.
Ailsa Craig opened the
scoring in the first inning
when Karen Smeekens bash-
ed out a home run,
Crediton took a 3-1 lead in
the top of the third frame as
Michelle Vandergunst and
Sherry Pfaff doubled and
Deb Lord cashed them in
with a home run.

Hawks plan
practices
Manager Fred Morn-
mersteeg and coach Ron
Bogart have lined up pre-
season training camp
workouts for the Exeter
junior Hawks.
The opening practice will
be at the Stephen township
arena on Sunday, September
21 from 12 noon to 2 p.m.
The next four workouts
will be from 8 to 9 p,m. on
September 26 and 27 and
October 3 and 4. Then it's
back to 12 noon on Sunday,
October 5.
The first training session
at the South Huron Rec
Centre will be Tuesday,
October 7.
Manager Mommersteeg
said this week he expects
most of last year's club to be
back again for the 1980-81
season,
The only missing players
due to age requirements will
be Dave Kinsman, Cam!
Haist and Dwight Consitt.
Mommersteeg said any
new players wishing to try
out with the Hawks will be
more than welcome at any of

place second
Exeter pee-wees, who
finished their divisional
soccer season in second
place with only three losses
and a tie, played tota,win and
a loss last week.
Monday they beat'Nairn 2.
1, playing in , Exeter. On
Wednesday, in Lucan, they
lost 4-2 to their hosts.
In the Nairn game, the
visitors were 1-0 at the half
against Exeter, with both
teams playing exciting
soccer, But at 15 minutes
into the second half, Marc
Winters got Exeter level
with a clear shot into the
Nairn goal.
Then, with five minutes
remaining, Andre Winters
pushed the ball across the
visitors' net for Steve Gould
to score the winner.
The 4-2 loss to Lucan,
Wednesday, had Andre
Winters'scoring on a penalty-
shot for Exeter to get his
club on the board at 2-1 in the
opening half. Lucan,
however, were 4-1 leaders at
the interval.
In the second half, Lenny
Dietrich scored Exeter's
second goal to end the match
at 4--2 for Lucan.
Exeter hosts the play-off
tournament at Canner's
field, Saturday, September
13; to which the public is
invited.
Ironwood
ladies golf
At this week's ladies
competition at the Ironwood
golf course, hidden score
winners were Helen Burton,
Sandra Rowe, Verla Russell,
Marg Skinner and Audrey
Fairbairn.
The ladies are again in
action today, Wednesday at 5
p.m. with a pot luck supper
following.
