While there have been no
cases of parvo virus in dogs
in the Exeter area, the
dem'and for the vaccine is
high, according to Dr. W.G.
Balstion, of the Exeter
Animal Hospital,
Parvo virus, a fatal
disease among dogs,
reached epidemic propor-
tions in some cities • this
summer. Several deaths
were reported in Windsor
and London. Symptoms of
the disease are vomiting and
diarrhoea, and if not treated
immediately, will result in
death within a few days. The

disease is highly contagious.
Dr, Balsdon says that the
disease was unknown until
recently and isolated. No
vaccine has yet been
developed. A vaccine used
for feline distemper is ef-
fective in preventing the
disease.
Because of the sudden
demand for the serum in the
cities, companies have been
caught unprepared. Dr.
Ralsdon says that he is
running short of the serum,
and he probably won't be
able to obtain more,
Dr, Balsdon says that next
year a serum to prevent
parvo virus will probably be
developed. He has heard that
Australians are already
working on a serum.
He pointed out that
distemper is seldom seen
any more because pet
owners take care to have
their dogs vaccinated.
Dr, Balsdon expressed
concern that because of all
the publicity surrounding
parvo virus, rabies may be
neglected. He said that there
have been several cases of
rabies in this area this year,
and added that it may be on
the upswing, He warned that
pet owners should have
animals vaccinated against
rabies once a year.
