signs snagged
A move to •eliminate
business signs overhanging
Middlesex County road
allowances has hit a snag at
the committee stage.
Reeve Ivan Hearn,
operator of a Lucan dairy,
criticized any thought of
elimination of overhanging
signs Thursday :at a roads
committee meeting. He also
objected to the idea of
limiting advertising signs to
the location of the business.
The draft sign regulation
proposed by the county
engineering department
patterned after a West-
minster Township bylaw will
be studied further before
presentation to county
council.
Reeve Frank Hamilton of
Glencoe, who has a sign
against his village gift store,
said overhanging signs could
not be eliminated for some
time. The proposals calls for
continuation of the
overhanging signs until a
repair or replacement is
necessary.

And the cost for using Bell
pay phones has doubled to 20
cents. But you won't get any
change from a quarter
because Bell officials said
it's too expensive to convert
the phones to give Change, If
aquarteris used though, you
. will get some time con-
cession.
Bell Canada manager
Peter Croome, Stratford,
said that pay phones in the
Exeter area will be con-
verted to the new rates on a
gradual basis some time this
week.
This will be the second
time pay phones have been
converted to a 20 cent rate.
Previous approval for Bell to
boost the rate was later
rescinded by the CRTC. Now
the CRTC has advised that
the rate be increased
everywhere despite the fact
that Bell only asked for in-
creased rates in locations
such as golf courses and
marinas.
Croome said that pay
phone rates had' not in-
creased for some time and
the company requires a
cetain rate of return,
The 13 per cent increase in
rates 'means that monthly
subscribers in the Exeter
area will now pay a base rate
of $6.25, up from $5.55. Both
two-party and four-party
lines have increased to $4.30
per month from $4.00.
The base rate for in-
dividual business lines has
shot to $13.90 from $12.30. A
Iwo-party business line has
gone from $9.80 to $11.05 and
a four-party business line
has gone from $6.45 to $7.85.
Switchboard truck lines
have risen to $21.75 from
$19.25.
The cpst Of long-distance
calls has risen an average
14.8 per cent for customer
dialed calls.
Other changes include a 10
cent increase to the 30 cent
charge for directory
now been broken down into
four categories, so you may
still be paying less depen-
ding on the service required,
Croome said. For example,
if only administrative work
is required, you'll be paying
less than if a serviceman
must come to your
residence. Before, all ser-
vices cost the same arneunt.
The increases - affect
subscribers in Quebec and
Ontario and will generate an
extra $1 million a day, or
$385 million a year for Bell.
Croome said that Bell
may have .a monopoly on
telephone service but not on
the costs of providing the'
service; such as salaries and
gasoline costs.
But there is some good
news for the hearing han-
dicapped who operate
teletypewriters. A 50 per
cent discount on long-
distance customer-dialed
calls is now in effect for the
hearing handicapped who ,
have these machines.
An explanation of the
increase in rates is included
in customer's monthly bills.
