Study Lake Huron ullies
Perhaps nothing is as,
unstoppable, insidious and
destructive as water erosion,
The chief perpetrator of this
force in Goderich, Stanley
and Bay Townships is Lake
Huron, which is stealthily
making inroads into Huron
County,
It is for this reason. that, a
group of students under the
auspices of the JCAP have
recently completed a study
of the gullies that menace
residents near the lake from
Goderldh to Saint Josephs.
The . Junior Con-
servationists, most of whom
are between the ages of 17-
19, worked for five weeks
compiling data on• gullies
stretching back from the
lakeshore which have the
level of Lake Huron after the
retreat of the last Ice Age,
some 11,000 years ago,
A gully constitutes a rift in
the land which forms due to a
natural water course which
arises from drainage.
Sometimes, however, either
due to agricultural drainage
practices or "residential
development, a gully starts
to grow at an unnaturally
rapid rate from increased
water runoff.
Soon a small trickle from
the .top of a bluff to the lake
can become a monstrous
"chasm". This in turn
threatens several. homes
along the lake with eventual
elimination due to lack of
solid foundation. And,
progressively disrupts
normal farm operations:
What, then, can be done to.'
control this seemingly'
destructive process? The
Junior .Conservationists
studied air photos, in-
t erviewed selected
threatened cottagers, and'
evaluated a number ,of
erosion control measures to
arrive at the following
recommendations;" •
Firstly, vegetation should
be employed as a means of
erosion control wherever
possible because it is
inexpensive and easy to
maintain. Moreover, nothing
anchors soil quite as well as.
an intermeshed root system
Of plants like crown 'vetch
and sweet pea.
Maintenance of existing
cover is most important, as,
re-establishment of
vegetation on a slope, once it
has failed and eroded, is a
most. expensive, difficult,
and frustrating process.
Secondly, man made
structures have a limited
effectiveness. Techniques.
like tile drain headers and
steel outlets, wing deflectors
and, lenient walls will
ch1111ne1 drainage away from
the gully sitlea, and slow
down theerosive force of the.
water,
In too many instances, the
Junior Conserva tionists
stress, there .is lack
of
human understandingab
the real danger lalteshOre
gullies represent. All too
Often threatened cottagers
merely rent their summer
home while the. landowner is
blissfully unaware that his
real estate is eroding away.
Also, as 90 percent of the
land loss occurs in the
freeze-thaw, and saturated
oil conditions prevalent in
spring.. breakup, few
seasonal 'residents •are
around to witness the periods
ofinostlactiveferosion. They
also found that existing
erosion control structures
Were poorly maintained,
hence losing their ef-
fectiveness over time.
Lastly, the students
discovered that agricultural
practices near the gullies
were the chief present cause
of gully formation and
growth.
