T-A photo With. 17 victories Times-Advocate, August 20, 1980 Poe 15 CO wgirls win title The •Crecliton Cowgirls edged Parkhill 4-3 Thursday night in a fast seven inning game finished in fifty minutes to win the district ladies softball cham- pionship, The Crediton club finished with a record of 17 wins and three losses while the Lucan Rookies lost their first place hold the same night by losing to Nairn and ending with 16 victories and four defeats, The Cowgirls will meet 'East ,Williams in the first game of the playoffs in Ailsa Craig Thursday night and back in Crediton Monday night at 9:00 p.m. Two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning clinched Thursday's win for the Cowgirls, Shelley Weber and Sandy O'Neill opened the in- ning with singles and both around to score. The girls played excellent defensive ball and started Bergman wins. Ken Bergman fired a $4 to win the low, gross prize in the "A" flight at Tuesday's regular men's night at the Ironwood golf course, Randy Evans with a 31, was best in net while Mike Cush- man with a 41 was low gross in the "B" flight and Don Heywood took low net with a 32. In "C" flight Ron Heywood was the winner at 45 with Walt Tiedeman one stroke back at 46, The low net winners were John Skelding and Jerry MacLean, Norm Whiting and Ken Varley took gross and net honours, respectively in "D" flight. . • using their bats in the,• third inning. Liz Pertschy reached first on an error in the third inning and scored the first Crediton run off the bat of Deb Lord. Singles Wilma Lagerwerf and Faye Hayter sent Sandy O'Neill home with the second run for the winners in the fourth frame, Back to back triples by T. Creces and C. Brydges sent the first Parkhill run home in the fourth. Joyce Steeper's double sent Beth Brass home for Parkhill in the fifth and , another hit by Joyce Steeper sent the final run in in the seventh.. Merner Construction of Clinton 64 in the B semi- final. The. MainstreamerS gained the B semifinal with a 6-3 win over the Hensall Legion and a 9-5 loss to the Exeter Carpetbaggers. Merners defeated Hurondale of the Exeter league 10-4 and lost to the Exeter Hawks 7-3 in the tournament's first game Saturday. In the 4 series Hensall defeated Hurondale 84 and Crescent Rolla dumped the Hawks .8-8 Monday in 'Exeter, Roth series: are a. best two out of three, In the B division' playoffs one series is all tied up, one could be finished and only Midgets in 00A. .play The Exeter midgets eliminated Clinton in three. straight games and have Advanced to the., Ontario Baseball' Association playoffs. The first opposition for they Exeter club will come from Bolton. Dates have not yet been set. The locals wrapped up the • series with Clinton with decisive 25-16 and 15-3 vic- tories, one game has been played in. the third series,. Gordy and McKnights are tied at one win apiece With Cords winning Wednesday 124 and Meicnights. coming back Monday .with. an 8,4 win. In the series between. Dashwood Industries a protest has been filed over the Les Pines 5-0 win over DIL Wednesday. In their game Monday the Les Pines edged the wood workers 6-5, The Carpetbaggers and Mt. Carmel have played only a single contest with the Baggers winning 6-4. The games in the B division, are also a best two out of three. The following are the final standings during regular season play; Hensall 26; Hawks 25; Crescent Rolls 21; Hurondale 20; Car- petbaggers 19; Gords 18; DIL 14; Les Pines 13; McKnights 1,3 and Mt. Cartnel 11.' INSTALLED - 4720.00 • - 5230.00 - 5780.00 - 6360.00 - 6960.00 The first ever Exeter and area men's rec fastball tournament proved to be a very successful venture with teams from Zurich and Exeter walking away with most of the silverware. In the A final the Dominion Tavern defeated the other entry from Zurich; the D.J.'s 12-3 to take the Molson Cup and a cheque. for $150. For their efforts the D.J.'s received $100. In the B final the Crescent Rolls of Exeter defeated the Seaforth Mainstreeters 3-1 to win $100 and a trophy donated by RSD Sports Den of Exeter. Named the tournament's most valuable pitcher was the Tavern's Brian Hodgins who allowed only four runs in four games. Leadoff batter for the Mainstreeter's, Brian Cooper, was named ,the tournament's most valuable player. The Tavern team found themselves in _the A final as the result of three straight victories. In their opening game Saturday morning they bested Hurondale of the Exeter league 8-0 and then blanked the Hawks of Exeter 7-0 Saturday evening. In the A division semi-final Sunday the Tavern bested the Clinton Bluebirds 8-1. The Crescent Rolls who were the Only Exeter team to reach the finals of either the A or 13' divisions lost their first game of the tournament 6-1 to the Seaforth Teachers Saturday afternoon. The Rolls defeated Gords Variety of Exeter 11-4 and received a bye into the B final against the Seaforth Mainstreeters who defeated Exeter Strikers lost 3-0 to Lucan-Two in squirt-division soccer in Lucan, Wednesday. The Strikers competed. with,only nine players. Even Burton,:.pOsts lowest' Store Helen Burton recorded'the lowest score and also fired the longest drive • during Tuesday's ladies monkey golf tournament at the' Exeter golf and country club. The prize for the least number, of putts went to Grace . Farquhar, Phyl Lawton was neared to the hole on number three and Louise Giffin was judged the most honest golfer. Hidden hold prizes were won by Jeannette Turner and Gert Beaver while door prizes were won by Doris Miller, Grace Farquhar, Janie McDowell, Dorothy Marks, Louise Giffin and Marj Pollen. A successful penny sale was held after a delicious buffet luncheon. defeated Hensall and the Carpetbaggers by scores of 7-5 and 7-0-respectively, the Zurich D.J.'s hammered Gord's Variety 10-2 and won over the Teachers 6-3. Tournament organizer Larry Beuermansaid he was pleased with the tournament and complimented the many members of the Exeter league who assisted in the tournament's running. Providing the umpires for the tournament was tne London Umpires Association. Net proceeds from the tourney will go towards the fund raising campaign for the community park. so, Exeter held the league- leading Lucan side 1-0 until about 10 minutes from full time, when they were hit for two quick goals. Lucan-Two finished their minor. soccer season un- defeated. Finals will be held in Nairn in September, with dates to be announced! David Schwindt, normally a defender, kept goal for the Strikers, and keptit well. He saved on a penalty-kick late in the game, and otherwise performed Solidly. The short-sided Exeter team also got excellent work from its other eight players;. Steven Sillery, Mark and Jeff Burton, Robbie McLelland, Jason Heywood, Brett Rideout, Peter McAlister and Stephen Cregan.
