Driver injured in mishap
Free at list is filled with
that oft-beat humour which
is truly Canadian. The satire
is along the lines of the crazy
stuff you see on Saturday
Night L.ive made famous by
its Canadian writers,
It is really refreshing to
see something Canadian at
Huron Country Playhouse.
The play is funny, but you
leave the theatre thinking
that you'd like to see it again,
just to catch all the jokes
that you may have missed.
The play is written by
Vancouver author Eric
Nicol and set in that city. It's
about Geoff (Jack Duffy)
who recently left his wife
(Aileen Taylor-Smith) and
starts seeing a girlfriend
(Rosemary Radcliffe). He
has a crazy landlady (Nancy
Kerr), who gets upset when a
friend of his daughter's
(Marueen Gans) tries to
crash at his pad. When his
-goat jumps out the window,
after eating his daughter's
marijauna plant, a police
woman hassles him.
In case you haven't got the
picture, this guy is bugged
by women — even the goat's
a nanny!!
The situation is funny
enough, but the one-liner
make it even better. Fel-
example, when Geoff asks
his girlfriend to bring back a
gift he has given her, he says
that she'll think he is an
Indian giver, She says, "No,
I have too much respect for
our native people."
There's more Canadian
humour when his wife
reports that their daughter
and her boyfriend were
having a big fight, and
throwing a veg-a-matic at
each other. She gave them
money and sent them to a
hockey game. Geoff replies,
"That's good, if they're
bleeding, no one will notice."
Duffy is great as Geoff
Gideon. His facial ex-
pressions make the show.
When Sheila, the girlfriend,
straightens his back after he
throws it out of joint, the
contortions he puts his face
through are hilarious. At
first it bothered me when he
didn't move about and wave
his arms when he waxed
eloquent, but then I realized
that Geoff is an inhibited
type, and that explained why
Duffy was standing there
nervously clicking his
fingernails.
Rosemary Radcliffe
matched her great per-
formance as the civil servant
in Spring Thaw. She 'even
looks like the type that would
eat chocolate covered
locusts because they're rich
in protein. She manages well
as a team mate for Duffy.
Aileen Taylor-Smith , ap-
pears to enoy being on stage,
taking a break from her
paper work as artistic
director of the playhouse.
She plays Ann, the wife, who
is just getting over an affair
with a junk man.
Once again, local talent
has proven good. Maureen
Gans, an Exeter native, does
ari excellent job of playing
Bonnie, a burnt-out
teenager. She is a good
friend of Jack's daughter
because they have the same
probation officer. She ap-
peared perfectly at home
during her debut on stage,
Nancy Kerr played the
loony landlady — a bit
reminiscent of Mrs. Roper of
Three's Company fame, You
probably wouldn't recognize
her, but last. year Nancy
played the Mother Superior
in The Sound of Music. You
won't recognize without her•
costume on; either.
Heather Bonham played
the tough lady cop. She did
well as a female Joe Friday,
Dragnet style, as she
scribbled in her note book.
Costumes were good —
perhaps a bit overdone in the
caseof the landlady. My only
complaint might be that
Bonnie's blue jeans were too
new and crisp. They didn't
back her story that she had
been on a six hour bus ride.
Even the goat — who we
didn't see all during the show
— came forward to take a
bow. Unfortunately, I un-
derstand that the goat's
,curtain call was just an
opening night treat. She's
gone home to relax at the
farm down the road after her
brief stage career.
The set was good. There is
spontaneous laughter from
the audience when the
curtains open to reveal
Geoff's apartment filled with
his daughter's plants in the
second act. But the laughter
increase where, there is a
great commotion behind the
/curtain before the last scene
and we hear the goat
escaping from her crate.
When the curtains open
again, and all we see are a
few stocks where an abun-
dance of greenery had been,
the hilarity is -great. The
goat ate the whole family of
plants — all Geoff's grand-
children!
The homey atmosphere
continues at the playhouse
this season. After the show,
everyone has a chance to
speak with the actors, and
enjoy a drink.
We caught the young
players "Way off Broad-
way" revue after the per-
formance again, and it gets
better each time. If you have
the chance, stay for it.

Monday night was
Patron's nightat the theatre.
The free show was offered to
everyone who had donated to
the playhouse this year.
Afterwards, a "midnight
breakfast" was served. A
crowd of about 450 lined up,
as tons of eggs were
scrambled and served up on
plates.

Ontario cup
The Grand Bend Colonials
lost to Windsor Croatia in a
disappointing bid for the
Ontario Cup Saturday. Dave
Nolan got the only Grand
Bend goal, as the Windsor
team scored nine. • Grand
Bend players admitted that
they were outclassed in the
match.
The Windsor team took the
Ontario Cup last year, and
look to be headed in that
direction again this year.
They were finalist in the
Canadian championship,
losing to a Newfounlandland
team.
The Grand Bend team
were pleased that the
Windsor players
congratulated them after the
game. Several Windsor
players said that Grand
Bend had an excellent team
for the size of the village.
On Sunday, the Colonials
bounced back to beat
Taxandria from Arkona 3-1.
Kevin Simmonds scored
twice, while Dave Nolan put
one in.
The Grand Bend B's lost to
Lucan, giving Lucan their
first win of the season. At one
point Grand Bend was
ahead 2-0, but the Lucan
team scored three after that.
Nick Vandenberk scored
both of the B's goals.
The Atoms beat Goderich

O'Connor got two goals,

Playhouse manager Marc
Quinn said that the sale was
a success, and they hope it
will become an annual event.
Stewart gave a percentage of
his sales to the- playhouse.
Quinn said that it was un-
fortunate that the pottery
exhibition was held on the
same day as the craft sale at.
Lambton Heritage Museum.
He added that dates would be
considered carefully next
year.
