At one count some 67 persons were in attendance. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss and to take action, as residents and property owners of Vanastra, on a proposed by- law, advanced by the council of Tuckersmith Township, to burden the people of Vanastra only, through taxes, with a $130,000.00 debenture incurred upon the recreational complex in 1974. I called this meeting together. I took this action because I sensed an injustice and unfairness in the whole situation. I also took this action because as I listened to the people of Vanastra, I sensed a feeling of bitterness and frustration. I sensed a feeling of betrayal and helplessness, Arid this, Mr. Editor, is what I want to write about. Other persons more knowledgeable than I, and also in a better position to deal with the facts 'and financial manipulations in this whole matter, will no doubt see this matter through. My purpose is to share with our fellow neigh- bours throughout the township something of the feelings among the Vanastra people. No doubt I do not speak for every person in the com- munity, but .then I do have my ears close to the ground. One thing I have learned as a trained family and marriage counselor and that is to listen, and to listen well. Yes, there was a certain idealism with the persons in Vanastra who in 1974 signed a petition with the Township of Tuckersmith for help with a recreational centre, The vision was a meeting hall for clubs and groups, an outdoor swimming pool, a wading pool for the many little ones and the curling club building for a great variety of ac- tivities. And yes, the petitioners were willing to pay for these community facilities through their taxes. But the Township was needed as a corporation to bring this vision about. The vision was a limited recreational facility, suitable to the needs of the community, and something which the com- munity could afford. In short, a facility byand for the community of Vanastra. And it was also understood that through government grants, the burden would not be too heavy. But then something, maybe a lot, went wrong. Reality can be cruel, you know. The original vision or dream was crushed, and instead came the nightmare, a complex of facilities way beyond the needs and the original intent of the small Vanastra community. From the time that the township took overthe ownership, management and financial responsibilities of the recreational facilities, the beautiful dream of something by and for the people of Vanastra turned into a nightmare. The dream was dead, and the idealism turned into bitterness. And now the people in Vanastra are asking the question: Why is the township so determined to burden us with so large a debt, for something which isn't ours anymore? Most of us can accept, or at least resign ourselves to the fact that the recreation centre isn't ours anymore. Maybe it never was! But then the people in Vanastra do enjoy some benefits of the facilities; some. Yet the injustice and unfairness of so large a debt, $130,000.00 on so few of us, that, Mr, Editor, leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. Mr. Editor, some 200 Vanastra ratepayers are facingthisquestion.,A,nurnber of us raise their voice by objecting to the proposed by - law number 11-1980 hoping for a fair hearing by council and the O.M.B. Yet there are also' some 1200 ratepayers in the larger township area who are and ought to face the same question: Why? My appeal for fairness, for fairplay, goes in addition to the council members of Tuckersmith Township, to our 1,200 fellow neighbours. Please understand our situation. Our dream is shattered, our original vision is turned into a nightmare. We are small, we are few. But we are people, we have feelings. And right now our feelings are bitter and we are frustrated. We feel betrayed. And we sense that because we are few and small, our voice is not heard and we are burdened unfairly. And we keep on asking ourselves, and you: Why?
