Or ROSS MAUGt$
ROM we are back at work after a very enjoyable
two weeks of holidays and trying to catch up on the
sporting sceife,
, The most surprising news on the Canadian scene
Would appear to be the great start in. the Canadian
Football league by the Toronto Argonauts.
Despite victories in their first two starts, new
• head coach Willie Wood says he is not happy with his
club's performances in the wins over Montreal and
Calgary..
While the Argos are off and running, the eastern
division champion Montreal Alouettes appear to be in
trouble, We would hazard a gtiesS that by the end of the
first six weeks of play the Montreal and Toronto clubs
will be a little closer together.
In major league baseball, the Toronto Blue. Jays
have run into a summer slump, but, now appear to be
back on the.right track after two weekend wins in Seat-
tle. They are currently only three games back of the
Cleveland Indians and two other teams in the two
leagues have worse records,
Dave Stieb continues to be a bright spot for the
Blue Jays. He continues to pitch well with six con-
secutive complete games, something unheard of in the
first three seasons of the Toronto team.
`The Blue Jays are at or near the top of the major
leagues•with the most double plays and we have finally
realized one of the main reasons for this great feat.,
Sure the Jays have a great second base combina-
tion in Alfredo Griffin and Damaso Garcia, but there is
another reason,
The Jays will likely also rank very high in the
number of runners allowed to reach first base with
none or one out and set up possible twin killings.
The Toronto club has fallen below the .500 mark,
but, they are well ahead of 1st year in the win column
and attendance at CNE stadium is also up con-
siderably from a year ago. •
Long to be remembered
He shoots, he scores!
That familiar phrase will no longer be heard on
television or radio.
That's right, Foster Hewitt has officially retired
with the sale of his radio station CKFH in Toronto.
The 77 year-oldhHewitt said health had nothing to
do with his decision to sell. He added, "I'm feeling fine
and want to keep it that way, but, nobody can go on
forever."
Physically, Foster Hewitt has been the iron man
of hockey surpassing any of the players. From March
of 1923 when he did his first broadcast of an amateur
game to about 1975 he never missed an assignment ex-
cept when he was out of the country for world tour-
naments or winter Olympic Games.
Even on the day his mother was killed on a trip to
New York, Foster finished a football broadcast at Var-
sity Stadiurn.and was in his usual place in the gondola
at. Maple Leaf Gardens that night.
His radio station CKFH was openen on February
21, 1951 as a 250 watt operation. It is now 50,000 watts
and the base station for the Hewpex Sports Network
and Toronto Blue Jays broadcasts.
With Foster Hewitt established as the Maple
Leafs official voice on the air, his station was
recognized as the Toronto hockey outlet until two
years ago when CKFH lost the contract.
Foster admits, "Losing the Leafs hurt us, Another
thing that hurt us is the continually rising cost of spor-
ting events production. I am of the .opinion that the
future of radio lies in network operation."
Throughout the years we will likely hear, "He
shoots, he scores" on many occasions, but, not
delivered the same style as by Mr. Hockey himself,
Foster Hewitt.
Change in Date
We were informed Monday morning that the date
of the reunion of former personnel at RCAf Centralia
has been changed.
It will now be held on Friday and Saturday, August
7 and 8 at Canadian Forces Base in Trenton.
A former teacher at McCurdy school and an avid
sports participant and organizer John McCarroil tells
us that at least three former station commanders will
be in attendance. They will be Group Captains Bean,
Ockenden and Newsom.
IVIcCarroll who has put together a 45 minute tape
of the former air force base for his firm Perth County
TV News is trying to organize an old-timers ball game
for the reunion.
Yours truly was an umpire for many of the Cen-
tralia station teams and it would be great to get back
to renew acquaintances with fellows like Tiny Davis,
Jack Thompson, Tommy Thompson, Bill Hayward,
Monty Mon tomura, Doug Grayer and many, many
others.
The reunion' is open to anyone who was ever
employed at RCAF base in either a service or civilian
capacity.
We will have more information from John as the
August date gets .closer.
Don't forget
Another important date to remember is the
evening of Tuesday, August 5 in HensalL
That's the night, one of Ontario's top ladies fast-
ball teams, the Milverton Suns will take on the Zurich
Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes coached by Murray Baker of Hen-
sail are one of the foremost men's fastball tournament
teams in this part of Western Ontario.
Efforts are being made to bring three of Hensall's
veteran ball players out of retirement for the official
opening ceremony.
We will keep their names a Secret until next
Week's issue when we hope to have a picture of the
three ready for action.
In addition, Bill Brady, popular host of CPPL's
Open Line radio show will be at the microphone as the
designated announcer to keep everybody informed as
to What is going on.
Sounds like a great night and all proceeds go to the
South Huron Agritultural Society, somas of the Hen-
sail Spring Pair,
