New .anthem .for .Canada's birthday
Pao* 6 Times-Advocate, July 1900,
Odds "n Ends
By the time you read this,
Canada will be One-hundred-
and-thirteen years old, and if
things go according to plan,
we will have an official
national anthem - 0 Canada.
The patriotic song was
written one hundred years
ago. I took it for granted as
our anthem when we rose to
sing it at social functions or
heard the familiar strains as
our flag rose over Olympic
podiums in years gone by.
The' French verson will
remain the same. The new
English version will omit one
'0 Canada' and stand on
guard for thee, Critics felt
we repeated 'stand on.guard
for thee' once too often,
especially when the song
didn't tell us what we were
Standingonguard for thee for.
I was always a little
disappointed that the
composer ran out of words at
that point and resorted to
repetition.
T4 gentleman, who
superbly sings 0 Canada at
every home game of the
Montreal Canadiens, caused
a furor a year or two ago by
inserting the French version
into the English part of the
song - "0 Canada, glorious
and free; we stand on guard
for life and liberty; Q
Canada, we stand on guard
for thee,"
I like it, Standing on guard
for life and liberty makes
sense,
I wonder whether
Canadians will have as mcmy
problems agreeing on a song
as they do on the more im-
portant issues in Canada at
present.
Canada Day, Dominion
Day or whatever you chose
to call it usually passes
quietly, except for the ex-
pensive promos initiated by
the government in recent
years.
It's a little embarrassing
to note the July 1 week end is
effected as much or more by
the U.S. Independence Day
than by our own Canada
Day, Canadian camp-
gronnd are filled with
American tourists
celebrating their day,
The U.S. birthday party is
a big bash filling Americans
Withpride, while Canada Day
is a holiday giving
Canadians another long
weekend.
The events of the past few
months made most
Canadians aware Of our
country's greatness and
weakness. The majority
agreed. Canada should stay
united and seemed willing to
work at it, Maybe our ap-
preciation and co-
operativeness will make
Canada Day celebrations
more evident.
I have mixed emotions
about birthday celebrations.
Firewlirks, parades and
parties are fun, but they cost
money. That money could be
used for a multitude of on-
going programs - im-
proving the quality of life for
Canadians less fortunate
than the majority; helping
Canadians in far-flung parts
of the country to.get tp know
each other better; making
Canada's good. will worst at

home and abroad.
Signs of unity and caring
would be fitting tributes to
Canada on 'her day.'
