Considering
new services
Research is now being
done on the adequacy of
transportation services for
the elderly andhandicapped
in southern Huron County.
The research is being
conducted by three students
who have been hired for a
federal government-spon-
sored summer program
called Action on Wheels,
The students' job is to talk
to service organizations,
church groups and clubs
throughout the county to find
out what transportation
services are in existence and
what services could be
provided to make tran-
sportation easier for the
elderly and handicapped.
From there, a self sup-
porting working model for
additional transportation
will be established if
necessary.
Janice Dunbar, a fourth
year University of Western
Ontario student from
Belgrave, is the project
manager. Working with her
are Joan Huether, a Brussels
girl who is studying at
Fanshawe College, and
Debbie Hunking, from
Lendesboro, who has
completed her first year at
the University .of Waterloo.
Ms. Dunbar said, "I think
there is a real need in Exeter
for better transportation
services since there isn't
even a taxi service."
She said that after
studying the services in the
northern part of Huron
County, they hope to set up a
more efficient tran-
sportation system there.
Ms, Dunbar noted the
possibility that most
disadvantaged people who
need transportation are
living in urban areas and
that those who aren't are
often looked after by friends
and relatives.
The program is being
funded by the federal
government and the Huron
County Community Social
Service Council.
Wnen completed, the
survey will be given to the
Community Services Council
for study. Any group or
person who can offer in-
formation for the report can
contact Action for Wheels in
care of Betty Cardno at the
Huron County Health Unit,
105 Shipley St. in Clinton.
