By comparison, he explains, the entire theatre and the land didn't cost nearly that much when he set up 25 years ago. The Starlite drive in theatre at Shipka will be celebrating 25 years of operation this Monday. Desjardine says he is planning a special night with free balloons and gifts, The Muppet Movie will be shown. Desjardine says he replaced the old projector last summer because it was becoming too costly to operate, The projector which was the most modern available 25 years ago, operated on carbons and a large mirror to "throw" the picture. The carbons had to be replaced frequently and were very expensive. Now the projector runs on one light bulb - but that bulb costs over $1,000. However, Desjardine says it shouldn't have to be replaced for some Car & Truck Rentals Low rates by the day, week, month "We've got your wheels" Located at ... Thompson-Warner Plymouth-Chrysler Open 7 Days time. Also he purchased new equipment to boost electric power to operate the projector. Many changes could now be made in the projection room. When the room over top of the snack bar was built 25 years ago, laws required that all walls be 'fireproofed because film was so flam- mable. The re-winding had to be done in a room separate from the projector. Now film is madese that it is not flammable, and none of these precautions are necessary. Desjardine says he con- sidered three other sites before he finally settled on his location near Shipka. He says he likes his Shipka location because it is central, and he is able to attract people from both Grand Bend and Exeter. ° At the time he built the drive in, there were air forte bases at both Centralia and Grand Bend. Authorities at the base did not like the idea of a drive in theatre, and blocked his plans. Finally he was able to get the go ahead for his theatre. Desjardine says he got the idea of putting up a drive in theatre after. wintering in Florida where they were common. He still spends his winter in Florida where he goes to movies to select different shows for his up- coming season. Desjardine says that his drive-in has some unique features. The screen, which is 40 feet by 60 feet big and sits 16 feet off the ground, is made of plaster. He says many screens are playwood, and cracks show. His projection booth and snack bar is located at the rear of the theatre, so that the view is not obstructed. He says that many drive-ins have the projector in the middle of the parking area so that the it needn't be as strong. The main problem in operating a drive-in is the damage and theft of speakers.
