Tragedies seem to be coming more frequent in
sporting circles this year.
The most recent was the death Saturday night of
one of the world's greatest jockeys, Avelino Gomez.
Gomez at the age of $2 was one of the oldest active
jockeys riding on the Ontario circuit. He had retired
almost 10 years ago, but, after sometime as a trainer
came back to ride about four years ago.
He became famous for his spectacular leaps from
the saddle each time the horse he was riding won a
race.
His son Avelino Jr. has played goal the past
seasons for the Kingston Canadians of the OHA major
junior 'A' series.
Gomez known affectionately as El Perfecto came
to Canada from Cuba in 1955 and when his career came
to such a tragic end had almost 4,200 victories. He was
known to win as many as six races on one race card.
During the 1978 race season, Gomez chalked up his
4,000th win, only the sixth jockey to reach this mark.
During the past six weeks, two boxers have been
seriously hurt. Strangely enough both were injured in
bouts with the same boxer Gaetan Hart,
Ralph Racine of Niagara Falls is still in hospital
recovering from brain surgery in a fight in early May
with Hart.
Only Friday night Cleveland Denny of Lachine,
Quebec was operated on to remove a blood clot receiv-
ed in a bout with Hart.
It was the first time in 70 amateur and 19
professional fights that Denny was knocked to the can-
vass.
Two upsets occurred on the Friday night boxing
card in Montreal. The biggest surprise came when
Canadian heavyweight Trevor Berbick decked former
world champ John Tate.
The win will certainly boost Berbick's stock in
world circles and he will likely have little trouble in
getting matches against top notch opposition.
Berbick first gained prominence when he boxed
for Jamaica in the 1976 Olympics at Montreal. He has
since moved to Canada.
In the lightweight match, Roberto Duran caused a
few raised eyebrows when he won over Sugar Ray
Leonard.
There will likely be a rematch, but, this time
Duran will be in for the biggest share of the purse, well
into the millions.
It was great
It's hard to find the right words to describe
Saturday's Homecoming at South Huron District High
School.
The efforts put forth by staff, students and all
committee members were superlative, to say the
least.
Graduates of all ages appeared to be enjoying
themselves immensely and really appreciated the op-
portunity to come back to renew acquaintances.
Reminiscing and talking about old times was the
order of the day as former graduates gathered in small
groups.
The most frequent question posed during the
Homecoming was, "I'll bet you don't remember me."
The Homecoming was a bangup success and we
would hope school officials would give serious con-
sideration to a repeat performance every 10 years.
While talking took up most of the time for retur-
ning students Saturday afternoon, a few of the more
active tried athletic events.
Boys and girls basketball, girls field hockey and
wrestling matches were held, although they were
short in duration.
A former manager and water boy tells us the `50's-
60's and 70's men's teams played two minute periods
alternately and ended in a 12-12-12 tie. The ladies game
also ended in a draw at 8-8.
The 1950's team featured Bill Yungblut, Ron
Heimrich and Bill Batten. Hans Zeehuisen, Scott Bur-
ton and Bill Farquhar headed the 60's and 70's included
Brett Levier, Bryan Tuckey, Albert Klungel and Tom
Creech.
Thanks for the information, Tom.
Pee Wees win
The Exeter pee wee baseball team is off to a flying
start this season. During the past two weekends they
have been successful in Legion sponsored tour-
naments.
A week earlier, the local youngsters coached by
Jim Pfaff won the regional title in Goderich and this
past weekend they defeated Kincardine and Walkerton
to win the district championship in Listowel.
Easy winners
In last week's column, we wished the T-A
Bluewater Baby Dolls lots of luck in Saturday's bed
race at Grand Bend.
Well, they didn't need any help. They were easy
winners in the ladies division. The Baby Dolls were the
only competitors.
On a more serious note, the Dolls won a prize for
entering the best decorated bed. Congratulations,
Mary and gang.
