Letter to the Editor I' wish to express my heartfelt sympathy to the old faithfuls on the executive of Exeter Minor Hockey Association. Being involved with another volunteer com- munity youth. group, Girl Guides and Brownies, I too know the utter dispair and futility of trying to get parent participation in their children's interests, A few reliable (I'm trying not to use the words "old reliable") persons are always relied on to come through in order not to disappoint some very enthusiastic children. We seem to have a generation of parents at this time who feel the "Old reliables" will be there to carry on the activities while they are too busy earning a living, going away for holidays, working around the' house, mowing the lawn, visiting relatives, going to parties, weddings, en- tertainments, watching T,V. Leaders in the community activities also have these commitments, I've known some volunteers to actually postpone these things and even neglect their own family in order to see a group of expectant youngsters aren't disap- pointed by not having that camp out trip, or hike because of lack of super- vision. Parents point an accusing finger that they never were asked to help. Every volunteer of a community service knows the utter futility of spending precious time on the phone listening to the many excuses. Believe me, they've heard them all through the years. I wish to issue a challenge to each and every parent in. the Exeter area, Volunteer (don't wait to be asked) your services to at least one organization your child is involved in next year. We all can't be capable of expertise in very field but surely there is one place your skill and knowledge will help out one of these groups. It's a complex world our youngsters are growing up in and one parent or set of parents can't be expected to supply the guidance in all fields in order to develop their boy's or girls' mind and body to cope with the future. That's why contact with other adults, who can supply this experience for your youngster, is so important. Let's all chip in and make their load lighter. Don't wait until there is time, make time! You'll be surprised at your own capabilities once you at least try, The leaders and "old reliables" involved in Exeter Brownies and Guides are ready to call it quits too. There will be no new registrations accepted into the already over crowded units this fall unless an active, supportive, parents committee is formed to help. Sylvia Smith Aux. Sable District Com- missioner Girl Guides of Canada. Dear editor: Senior Citizens Week always proves to be a special time for seniors, and this year was no exception. On Tuesday the grade 6 pupils and teachers of Exeter Public School displayed their work of art, history, poetry, crafts etc. for our viewing pleasure, also pictures they took while on a trip to Midland. They were a very cour- teous group willing to show and explain everything on detail. They also served cookies, tea and coffee. After seeing the equipment at the school for modern education, we have an inkling of how some of our tax dollars are s nt. Friday we visit liuronview at Clinton for a program and supper.- Also a visit with the inmates, then next week the Lions Club take us on a tour. All these events mean so much to us, the Exeter Senior Citizens. Mrs, Leslie Thomson, secretary. ,* * To the editor: We are trying to organize a group discussion weekend workshop local folk school on "the Future of the Family Farm". The purpose of this gathering would be to examine several questions. What is a family farm? Is the family farm important for our future? Should we preserve and promote the family farm? How? If you would like to par- ticipate in a discussion gathering on these questions please contact: Adrian Vos, Blyth, 523-4294; John Van- beers, RR 1 Blyth, 523-4431; and Tony McQuail, RR 1, Lucknow, 528-6542. We. are hoping to organize such a gathering somewhere in Huron County and at a time convenient to members of the farm community. We believe this is an important area of concern and hope that if you share this concern you will let us know of your interest. Yours sincerely, Adrain Vos, John VanBeers, and Tony Mc Quail v v The Honourable William Davis Premier of Ontario and All Members of the Ontario Provincial Parliament and The News Media During the past seven years, prices of all metals have escalated more than in any previcins fifty years, yet there has been no boom in the mining industry of Ontario, Many are won- dering why. One obvious reason is that the Toronto news media, with the exception of the weekly Northern Miner (the flagship of the Canadian mining industry), have failed absolutely to enlighten the public about • the emasculating regulations of the Ontario Securities. Commission, which have been totally abortive and disastrous and initiated mostly by one man over the years and a few political appointees who know little about the mining industry and care less if it survives. These regulations and the punitige spirit behind the regulations have put the mining promoter, the junior mining company and the individual prospector in a precarious position. Prior to 1960 this group found 99 percent of all the gold mines (there were 145 primary gold producers in Canada in the wartime year of 1941), all the silver mines and 80 percent of the base metal mines, There are 125 provincial Members of Parliament at Queen's Park, made up of N.D.P. socialists who would have the government take over the mining industry, the Liberals who hope to defeat the government, and the Progressive Conservatives who have been in power for 37 years. Smooth and articulate and sure of themselves, the Tories are careful not to offend the members of the Toronto Stock-Exchange and the Investment Dealers of Canada, who have en- couraged the Ontario Securities Commission to continue its punitive course against the junior mining company, the mining promoter and the prospector over the years while en- couraging the gigantic manipulation of the entire stock market by the in- vestment funds and financial institutions. Dear Mr. Premier: Very few mines have been found in Ontario during the past seventeen years. Two of the largest were found by foreign corporations: Amoco Corporation = the Detour Lake gold deposit, and Texas Gulf Sulphur - the Kidd Creek zinc-copper-silver deposit. involved, but parents aren't It is an established fact that their buying and selling, mainly to each other, con- stitutes a large proportion of the stock market volume, Yours very truly, J.C.
