a severe snowstorm. The
buses, became stuck in the
snow. About 120 students
were billetted out to Exeter
homes.
1959
Near the close of the 1950's
the agriculture classes at the
high school received a good
deal of attention from the
media. Andrew Dixon, the
teacher had numerous non-
farm boys taking the course
and involved students in a
dizzying range of activities.
Grade 9 students acted as
chefs for the annual bar-
beque, whith fed 700 people
on the chickens students had
raised. Agriculture students
landscaped the school
grounds, planted flowers and
a garden, and (predictably)
had experimental plots of
white beans.
They transplanted sugar
beets, kept an orchard,
collected insects, grafted
hardwoods, tested soil,
forced bulbs and kept bees.
They, raised and studied,
farm animals. In fact, the
results of their poultry and
swine projects were
reprinted in the esteemed
journal the Farmer's
Advocate.
In 1959, the Superintendent
of Secondary Schools in big
sophisticated London was
heard to regret that
agriculture wasn't being
taught in his schools, Exeter
chests must have swelled to
hear such envious remarks.
1960
On January 1, 1960, about
$500 damage was done to the
S.H.D.H,S, barn when a
lamp started a smouldering
fire. A purebred boxer dog
died but a purebred
Yorkshire sow escaped. The
barn was torn down to make
room for a six-room addition
to the school.
