Ed Hunter-Duvar hum- med "My Old Jalopy's, a Cadillac"; while Barbara Brintriell preferred the more romantic "Billy Boy," In 1954-55, the football team won its first Tri-county football championship, and went on to participate in the WOSSA 1955 Here are some of the songs offered in the South Huron Music Festival of 1955: Modola Pumpa, Gently Evening Bendeth, Drink to Me Only, Little Hills of Nazareth, Sing Thee Songs of Araby, The Shepherdess, Stouthearted Men,, The Sailor Boy, Old Black Joe, Put On Your Old Grey Bonnett. (and shades of Dagwood), On The Road to Mandalay. The adjudicator, Dr. G.R. Fenwick, must have had ears of iron - he listened to 33 versions of "Away in a Manger" in the Girls'Duel section. Some 250 boys and girls, the highest enrolment ever, were members of the S.H.D.H.S cadet corps. In 1955-56, Messrs. Joseph Wooden and Kenneth Ottewell came to South Huron. 1956 Enrollment in 1956 was 525 students. You have to wonder about the Special Commercial class of 1956 They went by nicknames such as Lamp- post, Rat, Herne, Magoo, Dot, Mouse, Kitten, Blondie, Squirt and Chicken. Mrs. Burton, their teacher, was called Mrs. Burton. The 1956 openhouse and barbeque was attended by 600 people. Awards were presented to 30 students. Tenders for a five room addition and cafeteria were issued. Bids ranged from $164,000 to $183,000. None was accepted because all exceeded the Board's guideline of $137,000. Bob Galloway was the 1956 Corn King at the Royal Winter Fair. Mr. Bruce Perry came to the school in 1956-57. 1957 On February 22, 1957, a tender was accepted for the proposed five classroom and cafeteria expansion. The cost was to be $150,000. Robin Smith became South Huron's first posture queen in 1957. The tall, pretty 15- year-old was chosen queen over 16 other candidates. The award was presented at the annual graduation dance. The contestants were judged by a panel of three judges on their standing, sitting, and walking postures. Each of the 17 classes in the school selected a can- didate to represent them in the judging final. The proud winner was presented with a jewelled compact. The Chicken Barbeque was attended by over 500 people. H,L. Sturgis, prin- cipal, said it was the "best ever". 1958 • The 1958 Inkspot ran some sample opinions on "Rock 'n Roll, the new music fad sweeping the country." Eighty percent agreed with Ruth Wiedo who said, "I hope it's here to stay 'cause I really like it. It's a lot better than •old fashioned dancing our parents brag about." "Straw elections" held in 1958's history classes gave "unbelievable" results, according to the Inkspot. The Progressive Conservatives were victorious. in every class. The Inkspot guessed it was because students had heard their parents praising the party, and predicted a bright future for the PC's.
