PREMIER VISITS — Before the official opening of the new Exeter District High School, a
banquet was held at dub Monetta. Seated at the head table (left to right): Mr. H. McKay ,
of McKay-Cocker (the construction firm which erected the new building); Mr. H. Steel, of
Page & Steele, architects; Dr, H.H. Cowen, chairman of the school board; Premier Leslie
Frost, who officially opened the school; and Mr. Tom Pryde, M.L.A., who introduced the

A large crowd was present
for the official opening of the
Exeter District High School
on January 25, 1950 at 2:30
p.m.
The singing of the National
Anthem started the af-
ternoon program, The
chairman's address was
then given by Dr. H.H.
Cowen, chairman . of the
board.
The musical side of the
program was presented.
' This involved the school
2hoir consisting of 50
students under the direction
• of Mr. C. Wilson with Mr,
' Sturges at the piano.
"Verdant Meadows,"
"Some Enchanted
Evening,'' and "Bless This.
Rouse " were sung by the
group.

mesented the school Bible to
, ?rincipal Sturgis, on behalf
)f the trustees and
•atepayers Association.
Mr. E.L. Mickle, vice-
. thairman of the board, then
• ntroduced Mr. Hailand
Steele of Paige and Steele,
• trchitects of the new school.
The Hon. Leslie M. Frost,
?remier of Ontario, of-
- 'icially opened the school.
< Prost said it would buy
' 'equality of opportunity in
ducation." He was in-
troduced beforehand by Mr.
' Thomas Pryde, M.L.A.
Other speakers included
Mr, Gray, representing the
Department of Education,
Mr. Cecil Johnston, Warden
of Huron COunty and. Mr.
L.N. Creech who presented
the trowel which had been
given to, him at the cor-
nerstone laying, to the
school.
Rev. Getz of Dashwood
dedicated the building, and
the ceremony closed with an
address by Mr. SturgW who
stated that, "the school
offered a great challenge
and he hoped that both the
staff and the students would
put forth their best efforts to
make it a success." "0
Canada" was then sung.
Following the program
The Exeter High School 15-
piece Bugle Band followed
by the school's 22 man Cadet
Corps under Cadet Captain
Gordon Cann, led marching
students to the
sehoolgrounds on June 8,
1949.
This was the day that R.N.
Creech would lay the cor-
nerstone for the new Exeter
District High School. Upon
laying the cornerstone,
Creech addressed the crowd
with "I now declare this
cornerstone of the Exeter
District High School well and
truly laid with the hope, and
guides showed the people
through the entire school.
Guided tours were also
available at 8:00 P.M. that
2,000 people toured the new
Exeter District High School
during the day.
The next day, Thursday,
the Athletic Society held a
"Sock Hop," in the new gym.
Students danced in their
socks to the music of Glenn
Miller, Sammy Kaye and all
their favourites,
Friday was declared ' a
holiday by Hon. Leslie Frost,
for the students to remember
the official opening of their
new school which is
celebrating 30 years at this
years Homecoming.
in the faith that the building
will answer in the fullest
measure that purpose for
which it is intended and that
it will be a credit to the
School Board, a credit to the
District it is meant to serve
and honour."
Dr. H.H. Cowen, chairman
of the Board was the master
of ceremonies. Speakers at
the ceremony included John
Armstrong, warden of Huron
County, Thomas Pryde,
M.L.A. Huron South and
G.L. Gray departmental
inspector for Huron.
