SPECIAL
SPYS
GOOD SHOW
Thanks to the Lucan
District Lions for sponsoring
the circus last Wed', -sday
evening. There was a "full
tent" for the 6 p.m. show and
the children really enjoyed it,
It seemed the rides on the
elephant during the in-
termission were the most
popular part of the show and
many had to wait until after
the show to have their turn
as they already held their
tickets.
The magician was par-
ticularly good and kept
adults, as well as children,
completely mystified.
Of course, the trained
poodles stole the hearts of
everyone and the horses,
while in much too confined a
-e space, performed well.

Forty-five Lucan W.I.

Miniatures, near St,
Catharines, on Tuesday,
June 3rd. While the
Miniatures were most in-
teresting, the grounds were
far from ready and members
recommend that anyone
planning this trip should wait
another two weeks, or more.
Following a delicious
smorgasbord at the
Prudholm Convention
Centre our excellent driver,
Peter McNaughton, took us
on a scenic tour of Niagara
Falls, and along the Gorge
Drive to Niagara-on-the-
Lake, where the ladies were
"turned loose" for an hour's
shopping.
We returned via
Hamilton, which we hit at
rush hour, so again we had a
short stop at a large Shop-
ping Centre to let the traffic
thin out. Then on for a quick
snack at "Carl's" in Cam-
bridge and thence home.
The convener, Mabel
Froats, thanked Mr.
McNaughton and our guests
for helping to make the trip
so successful and Iva
Hodgins thanked Mabel for
all her work in connection
with the trip.
Rev. Ray Brewster led the
service along with the hymns
and choruses at Lucan
Revival Centre.
Miss Judy Henry told the
children a story before
taking them down to Junior
Church.
Speaking from Luke 13:18-
30, Mr. Brewster said "A
very rich young ruler had an
encounter with Jesus .and
asked Him what he must do
to inherit eternal life." He
was told to sell all his
possessions, distribute to the
poor and he will have
treasure in heaven and
follow Christ.
The ruler could not accept
this. His wealth had a hold on
him and kept him from
having God in his life. God
wants us to be blessed with
money and material
possessions as long as they
don't possess us.
If God calls us to give up
anything in our life, He will
bless us with something
greater than those we had
before, The ruler could not
see this and was sorrowful
because of what he was to
give up, as he didn't realize
the greater blessings ahead.

Residents of Elm street,
Langford Drive and Fair-
view Place in Lucan are
asking village council for
immediate action on a dust
problem in their areas.
At Tuesday's regular
meeting, council received a
petition and this was backed
later by a delegation headed
by Russ Radcliffe.
Radcliffe said residents
questioned the good
judgement of council in
applying gravel and calcium
annually. He added, "Paving
is the only answer."
He was told by reeve Ivan
Hearn that Elm street was
on the current five year road
program and he hoped
preliminary engineering
work would be carried out
this fall."
The delegation also
questioned the priority of
street construction.
Councillor Gary McFalls
said, "This 'project was
already planned four years
ago for construction in 1980

Reeve Hearn said when
the street reconstruction
does come up it would in-
clude sidewalks,
To this Radcliffe replied,
"We don't need sidewalks.
Hearn disagreed saying, "If
you have new pavement
without sidewalks mothers
will push their baby buggies
on the street and this is not
safe. Sidewalks are a must
with new roads."
When the delegation left
Radcliffe commented,
"Your answer is not
satisfactory. We will have to
contemplate our next
move."
Reeve Hearn explained
that only so much money is
available for road work each
year and 50 percent of the
costs are paid by the Ontario
Ministry of Transportation
and Communications which
must approve all projects. •
Pete Sovereign suggested
that each property owner
would be glad to pay an
additional 45'0! on their taxes-1
to get the streets in question
paved.
After the delegation left,
councillors worked out rough
costs of such an undertaking
and determined the cost if
done under local im-
provements would be about
$50 per foot frontage.
At the same meeting,
council referred tenders on
the Beech street con-
struction project to engineer
Paul McIntyre for further
study. A total of 10 bids were
received.
Lawyers Bob Benner and
Don Hope attended the
meeting and reviewed a land
trade agreement between
the estate of the late Erwin
Scott and the Lucan Com-
munity Centre 'Board.
Council gave its approval.
