Nip Lucan,
Centennials post win
Martin DeBruyn pocketed,
two sudden goals, and Brad
Clausius and Alfons Weer-
sink scored singles for an
Exeter Centennial 4-3 soccer
win at Lucan, Sunday,
DeBruyn headed in a
crossed ball from Clausius
with seven minutes 'played,
Three minutes later,
DeBruyn scored again on a
quickly executed bicycle
kick with his back toward the
surprised Lucan goalkeeper.
Most of the game belonged,
to. the Centennials, They
were constantly aggressive,
but again.had their problems
with several luckless
chances, especially in the
closing half. Lucan,
however, seemed able to
make every opportunity
count.
77,)b Andrews started
Lucan's scoring midway
through the first half by
tipping in a cross. Then,
Lucan had the game even
early in the second half when
Jeff Craigmile got an open
run down the centre.
Brad Clausius answered
for Exeter with the go-ahead
goal on a looping shot to one
side of the Lucan net, at
about 65 minutes. But this
was immediately evened by
Lucan on a penalty-kick,
taken by Andrews for his
second score of the match.
Ten minutes later, with
Exeter pressing, Alfons
Weersink stuck a low ball
into the Lucan net for the
Centennials' 4-3 win,
Exeter plays at home at
Canner's field Sunday, June
15. With a game time of 4
p.m., the Centennials meet provide one of the bigger
Forest; a fast and clever tests of the season in. Ausable
team, and usually able to soccer.
A week ago we were in a sad mood in reporting the
retirement of John Hiller and the withdrawal of the
Lucan-Ildertop Jets of the Continental senior league.
This week it was Gordie Howe's turn to announce
he was officially ending his career which started in the
fall of 1946.
It's not quite the same with Howe as Hiller and the
Jets. He is ending his playing days during the off-
season in reasonably good health despite his age of 52
and ends on a good note,
Howe scored his first NHL goal on October 16, 1946
and his 800th regular season goal on February 29 of this
year.
The native of Floral, Saskatchewan is the only
professional hockey player to compete in five different
decades.
Howe set a number of NHL records that will sure-
ly never be equalled, He won the Hart trophy as the
league's most valuable player on six occasions, cap-
tured the scoring championship the same number of
times and was the first recipient of the Lester Patrick
trophy.
Gordie surpassed a one point a game mark
throughout his career with 801 goals and 1,049 assists
good for 1.850 points in 1,767 regular season games.
The only puckster on the scene now that has a
chance to catch some of Howe's marks is Wayne
Gretzky.
Gretzky got off to a fine start this week by winning
the Hart and Lady Byng trophies for his performance
in his first year in the NHL.
Howe and Gretzky played on the same line for the
WHS in the 1979 all-star series against the Soviet Union
and are the best of friends.
About Gretzky, Howe said, "I think the guy who
engraves the NHL trophies should learn how to spell
his name correctly because he will likely be using it a
lot in the future."
Diamond fun
The entertainment following Saturday's annual
chicken barbecue sponsored by the Crediton Parks
Board should be interesting.
The Crediton Cowgirls, ladies softball team will be
playing host to the CFPL all-stars from London.
Two members of our T-A staff Deb Lord and
Jeannette DeVries are on the Cowgirls team. Heading
the radio team are fellows like Gary Alan Price, John
Bowles, Ron Thomas and Don Ambrose.
Here is a chance to satisfy your appetites, support
a worthwhile cause and see a fun ball game.
While talking about exhibition games, the Hensall
Fair Board has lined up a top notch attraction for
Tuesday night, August 5.
Perennial Canadian and Ontario ladies fastball
champions, the Milverton Suns will be in Hensall to
take on the Zurich Buckeyes who have been very
successful in recent years in male tournaments
throughout Western Ontario,
The Hensall fair directors have been looking for a
good fund raising project and this appears to be ideal
and at the same time will provide excellent entertain-
ment.
Local athletes Lynne Farquhar and Iris Marshall
have been stalwart members of the Milverton Suns for
a number of years.
Good tourney coming up
On the same fastball theme, the Milverton Suns
and the Milverton Softball Association are hoSting the
first International Softball Classic this weekend.
A total of 60 games will be played out of Newton,
Rostock and two Milverton ball parks. Involved are 12
senior women's teams and the same number of in- •
termediate men's clubs.
In the men's section, the Zurich Buckeyes and
Lucan Irish willbe competingwhile the Milverton Suns
will be facing 11 other top clubs in the female division.
Most of the Suns opposition will come from other
clubs in the Ontario Ladies fastball league. Included
are teams from Buffalo and North Tonawanda, New
York.
Each team is guaranteed five games regardless of
their progress in the tourney.
For anyone interested in attending the Milverton
Suns games they meet Norwich Friday at 8 p.m.;
Saturday they meet North Tonawanda at 11 a.m.;
Richmond Hill at 2 p.m. and Kitchener at 8 p.m. Sun-
day the Suns meet Fort Erie at 12 noon.
The game against Richmond Hill is in Newton and
the contest with Fort Erie is in Rostock. The other
three games are in Milverton.
The first men's game Friday night at 9:30 p.m. in

tourney in Strathroy, the Zurich Buckeyes edged the
Irish 5-4 in 12 innings.

The Kirkton midget girls
fastball team won their only
league game of the week by a
score of 7-6 over Huron East
and won only once in three
games in a week end
London tournament.
Kirkton were able to edge
Huron East on the strength
of a nine hit attack and the
four hit pitching of Brenda
Iredale.
Jane and Laurie Simpson
each collected two hits.
Getting one safety apiece
were Barb Down, Sharon
Rundle, Brenda Iredale,
Sandra Fletcher and Corinne
Weernink.
At the London tourney,
Kirkton downed Oakridge 10-
8 Friday night behind the
steady pitching of Patti
Willis.
They fashioned the victory
on a three run uprising in the
seventh inning to wipe out a
one run deficit. •
Cindy Down led Kirkton at
the bat with a double and
single. Joan Cooper banged
out a double and singles were
contributed by Marg Miller,
Patti Willis, Jane Simpson,
Val Stephen, Jane Sims,
Barb Down and Sandra
Fletcher.
Saturday, errors and a
lack of hitting caught up with
Kirkton as they lost 10-1 to
Stratford and 7-0 to Penetang.
Leading the team at the
plate in the tournament were
Laurie Simpson, Cindy Down
and Barb Down.
Soccer crew
rebound for tie
Andrews Winters with two
goals, and Steve Gould and
Lenny Dietrich with one
each, lifted Exeter into a 4-4
tie with Lucan during a
peewee-division soccer
game in Lucan on Monday,
June 2.
Exeter had to battle for the
draw.
Lucan was two-up before
the locals worked them-
selves even. Then it was
Lucan forging ahead again
toward an almost certain
win. But with five minutes
left to play, Winters cut loose
with two perfect goals to
level the match at 4-4.
