Board. The Board accepted a
proposal made Monday night
by Exeter Tennis C100
president Bill Dinney that
the club become an ex,
tension of the Recreation
department.
Dinney said that many
people thought of the Tennis
Club as an elite group and
they resented the Club's
monopoly of the courts.. And
they didn't want to pay fees.
to- the private organization.
He feels people will be more
willing to pay fees to the
Recreation Board.
The terms of the
agreement are that the
Exeter Tennis. Club will
have control over the
management of the courts,
looking after such things as"
scheduling reserved time,
membership fees, lessons,
and maintenance,
The Recreation Board will
be responsible for insurance,
garbage collection and
paying tennis instructors. All
money from membership
fees will be used for court
maintenance.
Dinney said that no one
should expect to use the
facilities and not have to pay
for their maintenance.
Recreation director Ian
Smith said that the system
was really unfair before.
because the courts were
maintained by the private.
funds of the Tennis. Club, but
everyone used the courts.
Exeter rep. Don Cameron
said that an honer system
will have to be used for the
payment of membership
fees,. But he added, "There
will always be a certain
portion who won't pay."
Membership fees are $25
for families, $20 for couples,
$12 for students, and a new
rate of $5 for children under
12 years' of age. Cameron
Hawks lose
first r me
Thanks a combination of
their initial loss of the season
and a tie by Hensall, the
Hawks for the first time this
season are not leading the
Exeter and area men's rec
fastball league.
In the big game of the
week the Hurondale "Green
Machine" edged the first
year club in a slugfest 18-17
Monday.
As a result of their fourth
win of the season Hurondale
pulled into a fifth place tie
with McKnights and Gords.
Also on Monday,
I McKnights and Hensall
played to 5-5 tie in Hensall
which gave them their one
point edge over the Hawks in
the standings. On the
season Hensall has picked up
13 points based on six wins
and the tie.
Jumping up to third place
was Mt. Carmel who edged
the defending league
champs, the Crescent Rolls
6-5. The Rolls are in fourth
spot with a record of four
wins and a tie.
Picking up their second
win of the season was Dash-
wood Industries with a 9-8
win over the Carpetbaggers.
The Baggers hold down
last spot in the league with
'their single win while DIL
and Usborne have two
victories apiece. ,

said that locking the gates
was driving a lot of people
away.
Also at their meeting
Monday night, the Board
approved the hiring of Liz
Scott, Brenda Pinder and
Brenda Pincombe, for
summer program of special
activities, The program,
which is being co-sponsored
by Experience '80, begins on
July' 7 and lasts for six
weeks. It is for children ages
six to fourteen and includes
such activities as arts and
crafts, drama and bus trips.
Smith said that the program
is not only a town project but
is for local areas too.
Mel Gaiser from the
Geiser Kneale Insurance
agency and Dave Reed from
the Frank Cowan Insurance
Company reviewed the
Board's insurance coverage.
There was some discussion
about the accident coverage
for groups using the rec
facilities. The Board was
especially concerned about
activities such as wedding
receptions where the group
wouldn't have its own in-
surance policy.
Reed advised that it may
be a good idea to have groups
using the rec facilities
provide the Board with a
certificate of insurance. But
this proposal was discarded
because it would probably
restrict the use of the
facilities. It was decided that
the cover letter which groups
must sign, freeing the Board
from responsibility for ac-
cidents, was sufficient.
But the Board did decide to
add an insurance coverage
against accidents for Board
members who weren't
already covered on the
Exeter council. Board
chairman Howard Pym said,
"None of us get 'paid for
sitting around the table, so
- we need something to insure
us against possible ac-
cidents."
The Board is looking into
offering an extra night each
week for roller skating for
children after school is
finished. Currently on
Saturdayafternoonsthere is a
special rate of 75 cents for
children instead of the
regular rate of $1.00.
ThelBoard is also looking
into the cost of providing
wall dividers for the hall.
Cameron said that theliall is
too big for most functions
and dividing it would in-
crease its renting potential.
Exeter rep Jerry MacLean
suggested that the Board
make the dividers them-
selves. Exeter rep Wayne
Pearce pointed out a
potential sound problem if
dividers were installed.
The financial report shows
that the Board is almost
$2,500 behind in its revenues.
Smith said that this was a
slow time of the year but that
business should pick up in
the next couple of months.
Cameron brought up the
problem of revenue losses
due to booking cancellations
for the rec hall. He suggested
that the Board should have
alternate plans for the use of
the facility in case of can-
cellations. But Smith said,
"It's better to have nothing
than lose $100."
